La Taverna not only has fantastic food, but the experience is unparalleled to any other restaurant I have been to. You are greeted at the door with perseco complimentary of the house. Claudie, the owner of the restaurant is always up and about interacting with the guests which hands down makes the experience. You leave the restaurant with a shot consisting of a chocolate liquor which is amazing. Will be back soon!

After browsing the reviews posted on Trip Advisor I could not wait to get to the "Numero Uno" restaurant in Perugia. The first time we tried, we were turned down for lack of available tables (it was Saturday night). The second time, we made sure we have a reservation before showing up and arrived all prepared for a wonderful experience. The beginning of the evening was pleasant enough, starting with a complimentary glass of bubbly. Unfortunately, what followed did not live to our expectations at all. The Zuppa di fave e carciofi all'extra vergine ( soup of beans and artichoke with extra virgin olive oil) was tasteless and served in a tall narrow container completely not feasible for eating. The Cappelletti in brodo which is simply pasta cooked in broth were quite bland and uninspiring.
What followed was not much better. Mind you, it was not bad, the meats and the sides (all additional) were so ordinary that even the Montefalco that we drank with dinner did not make them look exceptional.
To top it all, when we attempted to pay, my American Express was refused by the waiter, even though they display the logo at the door. We were told the card was turned down by American Express. After a call to AMEX the card was processed and we left. My guess is that the restaurant did not want to pay the higher fee Amex requires and was trying to get us to pay with another card. It happens often in Italy.
Bottom line: no, we would not go back there.

Dear Sir/Madam, with all due respect I would like to remind you that we tryed your American Express card 3 times( you have the receipts) and it was denied. We then called American Express toll free number and brought the phone to your table. After your conversation with American Express representative your card was re-activated and the transaction went through. I understand that it could be irritating to be in a foreign country and have to deal with such a problem but I don't feel by any means responsible for what happened. And if I remember well, when I came to check on your table during your dinner you seemed happy with food and service. Yours truly, Claudio Brugalossi, chef and proprietor.

Nicely appointed place off the beaten path. Slightly upscale compared to most other restaurants in town. Pleasant, spacious environment. Food and service very good.

Expect delicious dishes that are made with fresh ingredients; served by a knowledgeable, chic staff; and artfully created by world-renowned chef Claudio Brugalossi, who will take time to stroll through his candle-lit restaurant and greet patrons, new and old. (If you're friendly, Claudio might just give you his spinach pesto recipe. And maybe send you an after-dinner tumbler of chocolate liqueur. Enough said.)
