Nicely appointed place off the beaten path. Slightly upscale compared to most other restaurants in town. Pleasant, spacious environment. Food and service very good.

“Tasty Italian Cuisine with a Twist”
Reviewed April 9, 2013

Expect delicious dishes that are made with fresh ingredients; served by a knowledgeable, chic staff; and artfully created by world-renowned chef Claudio Brugalossi, who will take time to stroll through his candle-lit restaurant and greet patrons, new and old. (If you're friendly, Claudio might just give you his spinach pesto recipe. And maybe send you an after-dinner tumbler of chocolate liqueur. Enough said.)

“best restaurant of our trip”
Reviewed April 7, 2013

This was the best restaurant of our trip. We chose La Taverna because of positive reviews on Tripadvisor and Frommers, and we were not disappointed.

We were here on a Sunday night in early April, freezing weather and not many tourists in Perugia that day.

The chef (owner?) welcomes each client like a personal friend and comes 3-4 times during the service in the room to ensure everyone is happy. This already is more than you can expect from most restaurants.

This is a mid-price restaurant, expect 30 to 50 euros per person. Not 100 euros per person like a 2 star michelin establishment, and not 10 like the pizzeria around the corner. For that price range I defy anyone to find better anywhere in Umbria or Toscane than La Taverna in Perugia.

Welcomed like family friends, and the meal was truly wonderful, everthing fresh and lovely very high quality. The house red wine absolutely perfect. We had: ravioli with black truffles (amazing but very generous portion too much for appetizer); cacio and pepe, house tagliatelle with eggplant zucchini and fresh tomato basil sauce, lovely gnocchi for my 11 year old daughter with fresh tomato and basil sauce (not on the menu but absolutely no problem for the kitchen).

Main course was VERY surprising.... chicken curry with rice!!! who would order that in an Umbrian restaurant?! My husband and son were tired of Italian after a week in the area and this was a welcome change. The Chef came out and told us that he was trained at the Tour d'Argent (Paris, look it up) and this was what the kitchen staff ate every week. I totally believe it (at least the fact that the chef did a stint at the Tour d'Argent).

I had the fine steak tagliata served with finely sliced grilled artichokes, with a little of the lovely olive oil left on the table this dish was fabulous (the potato gratin on the side was too much tho, I suppose many tourists only order one plate so the chef has to bulk up the quantities to please the masses).

Fabulous meal, fabulous setting, fabulous service.

Bill came to 170 euros for 4 people with antipasti, appetizer, main, dessert, and wine.

Bravo and thank you will come back next time we are in Perugia!

“The best restaurant in Italy”
Reviewed April 3, 2013

Having dinner at La Taverna even justifies a special trip to Perugia, a beautiful city in Umbria. My wife and I have been in many places around the World but can not remember a better restaurant than La Taverna. We just visited the restaurant with our 13 years old grandson, we remembered the place from our last visit to Perugia 14 years ago and had so good memories of the place that wanted to try again. Claudio the owner is a fantastic chef that has kept the quality of this restaurant at the top of the culinary experience in Italy and Europe in general. For us La TavernaI is the best of the best high level Italian food, the type of cuisine you only find in Italy. Great menu, wonderful service a beautiful location and a most extensive variety of Italian wines. If we come back to Italy will make sure to make a stop in Perugia and have a dinner experience at this great restaurant.
