Central, quiet hotel, with helpful and hard-working staff (although little English is spoken). It is not a luxury hotel but we thought it good value. Our room was fairly basic, but clean, and had a large bathroom. Typical buffet breakfast - there are fresh oranges with a juicer if you want fresh orange juice. If you are driving, the car park by San Francesco church is quite close to the hotel. The hotel will stamp your car park ticket to get a reduced rate of eight euros for 24 hours. It is not possible to park here on a Tuesday which is market day. However alternative parking is available in the car park at the Roman Amphitheatre, which is free and not too far away.

We stayed at Hotel Gattapone for three nights and did not want to leave. The situation was ideal for us with lovely views over the town and rooftops to the distant hills. Very central, but quiet and secluded; the staff were all obliging and friendly. Our room was clean and comfortable and very good value. We would love to return there if ever the opportunity arises.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front have lovely views.

The staff here couldn't have been more friendly, helpful, and co-operative. The big parking lot downtown had the mercato in it so they guided us up to park right next to the entrance. It's a great central location and Gubbio is una bella citta'. A delicious meal can be found at Il Picchio Verde at a very reasonable price.

Room Tip: Our room had a nice view of the clock tower, courtyard below and vally and mountians in the distance...

The hotel itself probably is at best a 3 star, but the city is at least a 4 star. Getting to the hotel is a bit of a challange by vehicle. The city streets are very narrow and a maze. There are lots of one way streets and not marked very clearly. Overnight parking is best in the city center parking lot as the hotel doesn't offer anything. However, Tuesday is city market day so do not plan on using that lot Monday night or Tuesday until late PM.

Can not say that the staff was able to help much since English was not their best. Breakfast was good standard hotel breakfast.

Do not even think about going into the city without a very detailed hard copy map or a good GPS.

From the very first moment when we checked-in we felt a genuinely friendly atmosphere and above all very attentive people. We had a very nice room equipped with an efficient air condition and a well equipped bathroom. Towels were of outstandling quality and the windows could be totally darkend which was quite useful as the sun would have otherwise wakened us up too early. Breakfast buffet offered more choice than the typical italian breakfast in many other hotels. You could even prepare your own orange juice. A special thank you goes to Paolo who not only serves the coffee but can also give you excellent advice on what to see in the area around Gubbio. We enjoyed every minute in the Gattapone and we have nothing but positive memories.

Not having a reservation we were given a choice of a double room or a family size for the same price,we chose the family one as it was much larger, very clean & comfortable. The room had been upgraded recently so it & the bathroom all had new furnishings, although a little older style,(maybe to fit in with the Hotel style). We were very happy with our stay there, loved the position & just loved Gubbio! It was one of my favourite places that we visited in Umbria & the locals were all so friendly & helpful,we could have stayed longer than 2 nights,we will definitely return ,especially to eat Taglietelli with Tartufo at "Taverna del Lupo" again, absolutely divine!

Ahhh.
Gubbio. Hospitality - no. Service - no. Welcome - no.
Fake smiles - yes. Watching how much money they can get of your purse - yes.
Closed shutters all over the town - yes.
No people but racing cars and bikes in the streets - yes (no pavement)

It seems that this town wakes up for a single day each year, when they have the candle festival. 364 days it is all dead.
Difficult to catch shops' opening hours, and if you finally manage to get into one, their smile lasts only until you are likely to buy something very expensive. Forget those nice dreams of going into a ceramic factory and stuff...
Horrible smell all over the town (smoke and truffle).
Restaurants with atmosphere of the sixties... Catalogue in Italian only etc.

The hotel was the same. Receptionist showed me the room but with an expression on the face like I had killed his mamma.
Room was big but so dark that I fell asleep in the day.
Bathroom too old with sky blue tiles (I guess that says it all. This colour was in fashion about 25 years ago)
Room furniture too old.
For breakfast you can eat tinned strawberry jam with tinned orange jam with tinned apricot jam and so on (altogether about 6 kinds) but no butter.
Only its location is perfect, you are in the very middle of an empty and dead town...

I did a 3-week-trip and URBINO, Orvieto, Assisi, Spello, Spoleto, Perugia, Lake Trasimeno and Marmore were fantastic though!
