After one week of sightseeing in the heat and the busy splendour of Rome, the "Borgo" was exactly what we had been looking for when we spent one week at La Tavola dei Cavalieri in August 2008: a quiet hideaway in a breathtaking Umbrian landscape, run by an open hearted team, sharing with us their passion for all Umbria has to offer.
A truly "special place" - what more to ask for?
LOCATION: imagine a cautiously refurbished Italian farmhouse located after 8 kilometres of steep and sinuous tracks in the mountainside "behind" the city of Assisi, offering an impressive view of Monte Subasio and Assisi and its "La Rocca" castle. The hamlet consists of three buildings: the "Manor House" (Casa Padronale), with the restaurant/terrace on its ground floor and double rooms on the first and the second floor; the "Barn" (Fienile), offering two "suites" on its ground floor and hosting, on its first floor, the reception desk; and the "Cedar House" (Il Cedro del Libano), located between the Manor House an the Barn, with another double rooms on the ground and the first floor. There are also two apartments suitable for families, located in a separate building in the heights of the site. The site is bordered by a vineyard freshly planted on the hill rising behind the swimming pool (come back in 8 years to taste the first wine), on one side, and the kitchen garden, on the other. We have immediately been captured by the quiet and peaceful atmosphere of the place, sometimes (and mainly on week-ends) contrasting with the animated and never-ending chattering of authentic Italian family life. During night times, once the restaurant closed, all we heard was be the sound of the crickets, and may be a serious nightly dog-to-dog discussion from one valley to another…
ACCOMODATION: We had booked one of the "Fienile" suites, and therefore had one bedroom on the ground floor, located just behind a living room of even size. A convertible couch in the living room could probably have served for a third person. The interior of our rooms kept the exact balance between tasteful and discrete refurbished 19th-century furniture (though offering the comfort you would expect) and the simplicity allowing the surrounding nature to play the main part. We did not miss any amenities: TV, comfortable bathroom with shower and bidet, tea kettle, (even wireless internet for unavoidable moments)…
THE KITCHEN: "Organic food" would be a rather dull description of "La Tavola's" kitchen, but nearly everything we tasted was at least homemade, if not event home grown: some vegetables are grown "on site", the delicious beer is brewed close by at the "San Biagio" monastery (belonging to the same cooperative), there is even an own pig breeding in the mountain behind "La Tavola"; where pigs are running free and eat what they find in the oak forest. All this is served within delicious, daily changing menus. We always followed the daily suggestion - successively "clambering" mouth watering antipasti, homemade pasta, delicious "secondi piatti" and desert - although there would have been one or two other dishes to chose. Having our food explained and discussing with the "personnel" was a delight! As an alternative to the home brewed beer, there is a large choice of organic wines, come from all regions of Italy, as well as the "must haves" of Umbrian wines, especially Sagrantino. Our anthem on the restaurant would not be complete without mentioning the terrace, where we watched sunset and the Umbrian mountainside turning blue every night.
and these people gave us the feeling to have a real passion there I We very much enjoyed dinner the restaurant's terrace, watching t Most we tasted at "La Tavola dei Cavalieri" was either homemade or home-grown (or both), but "organic food" would be a rather dull description of what we experienced during one week.
NOTE: "La Tavola dei Cavalieri" is one of the three sites of the "Luoghi Speciali" which you can visit under www.luoghispeciali.it. Take any information you can find on this site as granted: this is a gorgeous place!
