“Wonderful place to stay”
Reviewed October 6, 2009

We spent two night in this charming hotel in the lovely town of Assisi. The room was small, but comfortable and very clean. We stayed on the ground floor (which was very convenient as there is no elevator) but still had a lovely view from our window. The breakfast was rather basic: coffee, some pastries and fruit. The staff of the hotel was outstanding: very welcoming, friendly and helpful. We arrived late in th evening, and Gabriela phoned several restaurants to find us a place to eat at this late hour. She recommended I Monaci (which is a five minutes walk from the hotel). The food was so wonderful that we ended up going there for all our meals in Assisi, and we were never disappointed. We had to leave very early in the morning, before breakfast time, and the staff arranged an earlier breakfast for us. The only drawback of the hotel ais that it's long walk up (and I mean literally up) the street and then up the stairs to get to the entrance. But it's Assisi. :) We definitely recommend the hotel and would stay there again.

Three American women traveling together found the JFI Hermitage a most excellent inn from which to begin their Italian holiday. There are nine rooms at this facility, five at the main level, four upstairs. Like all of Assisi, one must be ready to deal with the stairs as there is no elevator. The location in town was superb, views to the west fabulous, the bathrooms new and well-equipped. The only downside was the lack of operating air conditioning in two of the three rooms we used. Definitely an excellent value for the money.

We've stayed in a lot of 3 star European hotels and paid from 55 to 90 Euros a night: at 49 Euros a night, this was not only the best deal, but one of the best places we've stayed, too. Our room was small but stylish and clean with a comfortable bed, a great view of the Umbrian countryside and a very modern bathroom. Italian breakfast is by nature limited, but theirs is very good and filing, with good quality bread, fresh fruit and hot drinks made to order. Enrico and the rest of the staff are helpful and also kind: meeting them, you start to realize you've come to a good place indeed ... staying in Assisi for more than a day is a very worthwhile experience. The hotel's location is excellent for exploring Assisi and getting to and from the train station by bus (I spent one of our days there in Florence.)
A hotel like this is a real treat for a young couple on a budget, like us, but it should also please travelers used to better places than we are.

This small hotel is located on a stepped lane in the lower area of town. It is five minutes to the center on foot, uphill all the way. The room was small by American standards, but average for a European hotel. There was an ensuite bathroom with plenty of hot water. There were views from the large windows in the room. There is a very nice patio in the common area. Service was friendly and helpful. Breakfast is large for Italy, with lots of fruit, juice, coffee, pastries and toast. Additionally, most rooms are at ground level or one floor up, so there are not a lot of stairs to climb inside the hotel. Assisi is however, full of stairs, and anyone who has difficulty with stairs would have difficulty reaching this hotel. There were no problems, and the room was inexpensive. I would stay here again.

As a treat to ourselves we decided to book the suite, while our friends had the standard room. They had the view, we had a huge balcony but not so great views and were overlooked from all sides.
It could be called a suite only because there was a seperate seating area from the bedroom but who wants to sit looking at a wall a couple of feet away?
We chose to have the aircon switched off, hoping to reduce the noise, but found the suite to be right next to the main boiler room so had to suffer the aircon for the rest of the hotel instead, only drowned out by the best earplugs!

The staff were lovely and did go out of their way to make us welcome and try to sort out our noise problem, to no avail. It was also very well kept.

Still, sadly, disappointing

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Hermitage. The owner and receptionists and breakfast staff were very friendly and the location and views are wonderful. The room, while small even by European standards, was spotlessly clean and the bathroom was particularly nice, appearing to have been redone quite recently. The only drawback was that our room was right at the top of the stairs, so we had some noise from other guests. The internet connection was fast and reliable. Overall, very good value for the money.

  • Liked — owners & staff, views, cleanliness and modern facilities
  • Disliked — room very small, some noise from other guests in hotel
