“Peaceful, relaxing, friendly and the kids loved it”

This was our first trip to Brigolante and Umbria.....d hopefully the first of many. The accommodation was first class - clean, well maintained and with beautiful views over the surrounding hillside. Visiting Easter week, the accommodation was a convenient distance (5 mins by car) from Assisi to avoid the throngs of visitors.
Rebecca and her extended family were wonderful hosts. Our kids had lots of company and the freedom to enjoy it and as any travelling parent knows, if the kids are happy, we can relax and that makes a great holiday for everyone.
The rural location and the bustle of family life all around offer a great insight into the local way of life. The passion of the hosts for Umbria and determination to offer their guests a memorable Italian experience is obvious throughout the visit.
We had a wonderful time, genuinely hope to return soon and would not hesitate to recommend to anyone travelling to the area for a rural break with or without kids.

Brigolante made traveling with young children easy! The location is idyllic, the accommodations charming and complete, the views breathtaking. It was a dream vacation, and we would return to Brigolante in an instant. I highly recommend staying here!

Check in was a little sketchy, we got there I believe early (2pm) our bad, so we went into Assisi which is absolutely amazing. Returned several hours later and found Rebecca in their apartment, and got ourselves settled. There were fresh eggs, a bottle of wine, jam and honey in the kitchen, how wonderful. The apartment itself was light and beautiful, I believe we stayed at La Logetta (sp?). The sitting area at the stop of the stairs is small but lovely and a good place to have a glass of wine at the end of the day. Furnishing and bed were very comfortable. Obviously this is Agritourism but be aware that you are right across the small dirt road from a cow /pig barn, on the first day they were cleaning it out and the smell of ammonia was very strong, after the first day it went away, certainly not a problem since that's what you are doing, just a factor. (We live on a ranch with horses, goats and chickens, so we get it) We had a lovely stay, and Rebecca brought us pesto that was absolutely great. The family works hard to keep the farm beautiful and productive. We had one hitch, a lightening storm hit the area, and the power was out for about 4 hours. We rolled with it, until we discovered that the lights were on in the main apartment of the owners below. We contacted them and the electricity came back on (we contacted them with another couple who was staying in the apartment below who were equally confused). We were on our own with that, but hey, agritourismo. So overall we had a good stay, went to Assisi every day, and one day had a wonderful trip to the Adriatic and had a blast. We wish Rebecca the best, it is a beautiful setting, close to Assisi, which was for us, the high point of a month long trip.

Amazing farmhouse appartments.
Very nicely remodeled with all the necessary amenities (and much more).
We were possitively surpriced by a welcome basket of homemade and home-grown products, including olive oil, wine, farm-fresh eggs, fresh-cut garden greens.
Mountain bikes were also available but unfortunately we didn't have time to use them.
We wished we had stayed longer.
Reecca, the american owner/host is very nice and helpful.
Nothing to negative to say. I highly recommend this place.
PS: Note that a car is required as the location is off-the-beaten-path.

We stayed at Brigolante for a week in April/May, and we could not have asked for a more perfect accommodation. It certainly isn't for those wanting to be in the heart of the action, but that's not what we wanted.

We arrived at Brigolante after 2 days in Florence and then driving around Tuscany and visiting hill towns. We were so tired of being around hoards of people and on windy roads in the car that we took Sunday, our first full day there, to relax. We sat on the little landing of our upper-floor apartment and read books in the sunshine, went on a challenging walk to a little church up the hill, and had a homemade dinner after 4 days of eating out. It was exactly what we needed to tackle the crowds in Assisi the following day.

Important note: Do NOT visit Assisi during the last week of April and first week of May when there are 2 Italian holidays. It seems that ALL of Italy decides to visit Assisi then, and the crowds and tour buses are enough to give a calm person heart palpitations. We visited during this time due to it being the only option using frequent flier miles, but I wouldn't do so again.

Assisi itself is a lovely little town when you set aside the crowds. One of the reasons we were able to do that was because of Brigolante. Returning there each night was an absolute pleasure.

As for the apartment/complex, the apartment was spotless. I didn't see the other apartments, but ours was quite large. The grounds are beautiful, and it was wonderful to wake each morning to birds and the occasional cow. Rebecca, the owner/host, was fabulous at providing help and recommendations. We got married at the Assisi city hall the Friday of our stay, and she helped us book my hair appt and our lunch reservation.

One of the highlights of the trip was the night of Apr 30, when we were awoken around 2 a.m. to a group outside in the courtyard singing and playing guitar, getting louder and louder until grandma (Rebecca's mother-in-law) came outside. We thought perhaps it was a birthday celebration; Rebecca explained the next morning that it's an annual celebration of the first day of May, and the singers go to houses and sing for food, wine, and donations for the annual May festival in Assisi. Even though we didn't go down and join in, when we learned what it was for, we felt like we had been a part of a piece of "real" Italy.

The last night of our stay we had our 2 friends out to the apartment where we grilled out our dinner and had a lovely, relaxed, inexpensive evening, something we couldn't have done in a restaurant to the same degree.

To sum up, we loved Brigolante. The quiet and remoteness wouldn't be for everyone, but it was perfect for us. If by some stroke of luck we find ourselves back there some day, we will be revisiting a little piece of heaven.

  • Liked — the ability to get away from crowds yet be only 5 minutes from Assisi

We stayed at Brigolante for a week in early May. The accommodation in a very tastefully restored Umbrian farmhouse was spacious, comfortable and immaculate. Il Focolare is a one-bedroom apartment with a huge bathroom and a kitchen/dining/living room with fireplace. (There are three apartments in total.) The host, Rebecca, is a young American-born wife and mother surrounded by her extended Italian family who carry out the activities of farming around the you. Guests are usually treated to products of the farm such as freshly-laid eggs, olive oil, honey, wine and produce. Rebecca is not intrusive but if you need anything during your stay, she is the personification of kindness and generosity. We felt immersed in rural Italian life with the advantage of having a native English speaker to help us with our crises. Magical Assisi is a relatively short drive away so we were able to go back and forth for the magnificent Calendimaggio (May festival), for sightseeing and dining. We made breakfast and occasional suppers in the kitchenette and took long walks in the beautiful countryside. A wonderful experience!

What a find! We had the best time spending a week with Rebecca and her family. The apartment was delightful and when we arrived we found fresh eggs, fresh green beans and tomatoes and a bottle of wine on the table. During our stay Rebecca dropped by with homemade pesto and pasta and homemade liquor. It was just like staying on the farm with cows and a beautiful garden. Rebecca was always available to help us with suggestions on places to go. If you want to visit a truly peaceful place, go to Brigolante. Assisi and the surrounding areas are wonderful. We even had the opportunity to give one of the local women a ride to the train station. I would recommend Brigolante to anyone who enjoys nature and a peaceful environment.
