Even if you are not a Catholic, this is the place where St. Francis and his followers stayed and prayed...take a taxi from Assisi, you won't be sorry.

The trail leading up to St. Francis' hermitage is steep -- you will need good shoes going up, and even more so if you go down. But the views are breathtaking and the hermitage is a wonderful site to visit. Be sure not to miss the statues of the three monks, each studying the stars in his own way.
As time was short, we took a taxi back down, that took us directly to the basilica -- the taxi ride in itself was a real treat, you get to see a part of the town that is normally not easily seen from the tourist areas.

It was a long, winding road up to see very little at the end. Took longer to get there than the visit actually took. Only visit if you have seen everything else in the area or a real St. Francis fan.

I liked the peace and spirituality of this place, you really feel close to St. Francis and his deep love for all the creation. It is so beautiful to walk in the woods, along the paths and among the other pilgrims. You can feel the force of faith and prayer.

What a quiet, peaceful and reverent spot this is. Takes you right away from the hustle and bustle of Assisi etc. We didn't want to leave.
