Owner description: The church of San Damiano was restored by St. Frances of Assisi and later served as home for St. Clare.

A lot of history in this old little cloister where the San Damiano cross 1st spoke to St. Francis. It was also the home of the Poor Clare nuns and the site of St.Clare's death. It is well maintained.
We stopped quickly for 15-20 minutes on our way to the train station.

San Damiano is great visit do on your way into Assisi if going by car. There's a beautiful statue of St. Francis sitting cross-legged looking out at the Umbrian countryside along the path toward the monastery. The exterior and interior are both lovely. A replica of the famous crucifix that spoke to St. Francis is there (the original was moved to the Basilica di Santa Chiara in Assisi).

We visited twice it was so beautiful. Small, old, holy place full of charm and well worn steps from people seeking something there. Tiny, beautiful cloister sound of the bell ringing every hour.
Calm, quiet and peaceful.

So peaceful.
Steep walk down and climb up, but well worth it.Difficult for the elderly people with us, but taking a little longer we could admire the wonderful views

This place captures the essense of Franciscan spirituality
It is a place of quiet for prayer and reflcetion
It can be crowded
To get there it is a very steep walk from the town centre
