“Presence of St. Clare”
Reviewed July 16, 2013

Beautiful church with the tomb of St. Clare. The walk from our hotel (Berti) was quite steep. But all of Assisi's roads are very steep up and down. The locals seem to walk slowly and constantly which I quickly copied. To pray at St. Clare's tomb was an honor and privilege!

“Interesting display of relics in the crypt.”
Reviewed July 7, 2013

This 13th century Basilica is interesting to visit, easily located on Piazza Santa Chiara, overlooking the valley. The Basilica is Romanesque in design, constructed in white and pink Assisian stone, the wagon wheel window high on the facade is a beautiful feature, especially with the afternoon sun on it. Beneath the church is the tomb of St. Chiara in the crypt. The highlight of our visit at Santa Chiara was seeing up close a collection of relics that belonged to St.Chiara and St. Francis also in the crypt. Their thread bare clothing, all patched up, a life of poverty.

“Moving”
Reviewed July 7, 2013

This was our first stop in Assisi. I was absolutely taken by the amazing collection of relics that belonged to St. Clare and St. Francis. This basilica also houses the original San Damiano cross and the tomb of St. Clare. This is a "must see" in Assisi.

“Don't miss the crypt for St. Claire's story and some amazing relics”
Reviewed June 27, 2013

Visited in June 2013. The church itself was beautiful, but the crypt is what really took my breath away. Visited St. Claire's burial place where we also followed placards telling the story of her life. There are also a number of relics related to her and St. Francis, including their clothes, her hair, her writings, etc. On the main floor we also saw the beautiful cross that spoke to St. Francis. I have never seen anything like it in all the churches and museums we've visited in Italy. Really interesting with helpful explanations. The square outside the church has breathtaking views of the Umbrian countryside that we enjoyed at night under the moonlight and again in the morning.

“Wonderful singing”
Reviewed June 21, 2013

You don't see them but they sing so beautifully at 6.45am. It transported me out of this world. So Divine the sound is.
No need to understand the Italian language. The sound is universal.
