“Unique and decadent”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 23, 2013

Our group of 7 (including three teenagers) stayed here as a splurge for one night in August on our way to Rome from Tuscany. It was a wonderful, unique experience.
We took advantage of the spa's 4 temperature rooms, hot tub and thermal pool on multiple occasions. Use the 4 rooms in the order they recommend as it helps you to acclimatize yourself to the different temperatures. Look for the hidden jets all through the thermal pool (there are buttons on the walls and along the sides of the pool operating some unique massaging jets). They do not provide shampoo and bath gel in the change rooms so bring your own or ask at the spa desk before you go in, My son and daughter had basic cleansing facials but were not "blown away" by them. They offer more extensive facial options that are probably better but they are very expensive (180 Euros).
We also ate dinner here and the food was excellent (although one of our servers kept giving the wrong dishes to the wrong people). The breakfast that is included has great variety and the service is good.
We had three suites that overlooked the garden terrace. The beds were luxurious and the bathroom well appointed. Even the "extra" bed that was supplied for my 18yr old son was very comfortable with a thick mattress. Book well in advance for a discounted price and guaranteed underground parking option.
I would visit the Nun again if I returned to Umbria. It was truly something to remember. (They should add a fitness room though)

Room Tip: We had suites 7,8,9 with a wrap around walkway overlooking the garden terrace. It was lovely.

This wonderful hotel is a real five stars ! First, the renovation of the building is a success, preserving the old walls of the monastery and even the traces of the roman baths and adding all the modern, design confort everywhere. Second, the food is excellent, tasty and original. Congratulations to the chef ! And last but not least, the thermal baths are beautiful, elegant and most pleasant. You can also enjoy different massages. The staff is very professionnal and helpful and the location is ideal. We couldn't find something wrong in that place !

Room Tip: The room 16 is smaller but is the only one to have a balcony and large view on the city.

This is a dream of a place .... As soon as you see the building you know you are in for a treat. This place is heaven , the lobby , the staff , the rooms and the SPA. We have travelled always staying in 5 star luxury and boutique hotels , but this one was the best. We stayed in a room with a 1000 year old original fresco. It's an only Nunary converted in a 18 room super luxury hotel , and believe me no expense was spared when building. The have selected the best materials and the best builders. They have thought of everything ....Everything!
The staff was amaaaazing , precise , efficient and very pleasant. If you Re in Italy and are close , you must detour and stay there !!!!!!

We were intrigued by the descriptions on the Internet. It couldn't be that good !We were wrong ! It surpassed our expectations by far ! It is a gem in all respects.DO NOT forego the wonderful Spa. We stayed five glorious days predominantly because and for the Spa !We came by train from Rome What a horrendous experience ! THREE very difficult changes, however once we reached Nun Assisi, all our troubles faded. We ordered a taxi back to Rome. Expensive but worth every "penny".

Room Tip: We asked for a room with a balcony and got one with a magnificent view. Yes there are stairs but eve...

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 25, 2013

We stayed for 6 nights whilst our kids were in Assisi on a singing tour.

Before I start on the hotel, a couple of other comments. If you hire a car from Perugia airport get an automatic with a reasonably big engine - don't settle for a manual cheap Punto with a dodgy gearbox and a small engine, it will drive you and people following you nuts as you often almost grind to a halt on the steep hills and sharp turns. The roads around Assisi are surprisingly small and difficult to navigate, so a Sat Nav is also a must.

Assisi "up the hill" is beautiful and calm with interesting churches, narrow picturesque alleyways and comfortable bars and restaurants.

One other tip, if you go to Florence (c 2 hours away), the centre is mad so if you can stomach the cost, the airport is about 15 minutes from the centre and you can park in the short stay and get a taxi each way, that way you can enjoy the city without further driving stress. (Total cost about 60 Euros).

So to the hotel. It is an old convent and has been refitted in a very modern but tasteful way. The rooms are not massive, but are comfortable with well appointed bathrooms, air conditioned and large comfortable beds.

The Spa is also amazing - I am not Spa fan and did not indulge in massages (my wife had two and thought they were great) but did do the Nun thermal path which takes you through a series of rooms from warm to steam to sauna, to fridge, followed by a pleasantly warm pool with massage jets etc. If you stay at the hotel this is included in the price and is a very relaxing and refreshing way to spend a couple of hours.

I thought the restaurant food was great, when we at it was reasonably full and had a nice atmosphere; my lamb was excellent as was the beef my wife chose. Breakfast was also included in the rate and we enjoyed a leisurely breakfast each day, including morning fresh squeezed orange juice, savouries, ham, cheese, smoked salmon and pastries, along with freshly ground coffee.

We did use the garage and I was OK with the supplement. The garage is small however, max 8 cars and it can be a squeeze. To stop people moaning about the cost I would suggest the room rate becomes inclusive but that people have to pre-book on the basis that space is limited. There is a local parking lot right outside.

So this is all very nice, but why 5 stars? well on top of this was the service, never intrusive, but always just right - help wit travel, parking tips, where to go in Assisi and even a lunch recommendation booked for us at Ridibis in Bavagne - well worth a trip. nothing was too much trouble and all of the staff had the same attitude to helping you and making for a relaxing stay.

It's a brilliant base to use if you are visiting the region and even Rome is drivable if you wish. I would love t come back again.

This could have been so much better. There is a lot going for this place. A good location in a very old convent. Some lovely staff doing their best with a range of challenges noted further below.
Dinner at the restaurant was patchy – a nice scallop entrée but my beef was tough. Breakfasts were good for a small hotel and the staff went out of their way to accommodate gluten-free options with muesli, bread etc. They even stewed some prunes and stone fruit specially. The eggs were also good.

However, there were a number of problems:
1. The air conditioning could only vary between 22 to 24 degrees and if you wanted it turned off you had to call reception to do this for you. We wanted it turned off on a couple of nights and despite there being the assurance of 24 hour service, the phone rang out and we had to put up with noisy and inefficient AC. At the room prices for this hotel that is just unacceptable.
2. The music around the hotel, restaurant and spa was generally inappropriate for the sort of guests this hotel would attract. It felt as though it was selected by young staff with little consideration for what might be most suitable for an overall integrated guest experience. Most of it was light, superficial pop with a beat. For a spa a more peaceful and calm style of music nurtures and soothes the soul which surely is the intention of the spa. Similarly at breakfast outside on the terrace one does not want to listen to rather loud beatish music first thing in the morning. Some classical or other beautiful ambient music. I style music for various retreats and spas and this could be improved and help create a memorable experience.
3. The spa itself with its Nun Path steam, sauna and cold rooms and pool and Jacuzzis promised a lot but was also rather a disappointment. The steam room could offer far more comfortable seating and to not have a freezing plunge pool is a lost opportunity. As well the Jacuzzis were nothing special and there was nowhere to have a swim.
4. The massages were very expensive and of poor quality. Though I asked repeatedly for specific areas of my body to be massaged during my anti-stress massage the entire massage consisted of large sweeping gestures and some rocking with some tokenistic attempts to remove the tension in my shoulders and neck. The masseur left me alone for the at least 15 minutes towards the end of my 50 minute massage when I fell asleep! My partner said his massage was not at all memorable - it sounded very similar though was supposed to be an ayurvedic massage costing 40 Euros extra for the 50 minute massage. Having travelled the world as an experienced spa devotee, I cannot recommend Nun Spa. Save your money.
5. A number of the rooms are quite dark and the whole place has a rather underground feel. In visiting Assisi I was looking for light and peace to meditate so probably wanted more of a vista. We could see Rocca Maggiore from our window which was good. However there was no fly wire so mosquitoes and other insects flew in if the windows were open.
6. Be warned that the hotel informed us of a 25 Euro per day charge to park the car in their garage. Given the cost per room parking should be included free of charge.

Room Tip: Room 2 has view to rocco maggiore and windows that open

On my recent visit to Assisi, my daughter and I were booked for a night at the Nun Assisi Relais. What can I say - it was one of the most stylish, modern and best appointed Hotel Rooms I have ever stayed in. Downstairs there was a neat little sitting room with bar, TV and beautiful books tastefully placed on little nooks, upstairs a fabulous bed and en suite on a mezzanine floor. Clearly designed and decorated by a very talented interior designer.
Expensiive yes, but what a place!
We both enjoyed a spa treatment, it was good, being a spa/beauty therapist I am fussy on my massaage and although asking for a firm massage the therapist seemed to have her set style, don't get me wrong it was a lovely relaxing massage but I needed a bit more pressure. The amenities were fabulous but unfortunately we were short of time and unable to enjoy the indoor pool. The entire spa is set underground in the caves and it was amazing.
Dinner was wonderful but as my daughter suggested was lacking atmosphere, we dined outside and there was no background music which would have made a fabulous setting just perfect. The staff were young (perhaps lacking in the finesse one would expect from such an establishment) but service was efficient. Food was of top standard.
My only regret was not being able to stay longer to enjoy such a beautiful Hotel. If you want a fabulous place to take someone special this is it.
