Owner description: SAIO is the Vineyard of Assisi: 45 acres of vineyards and olive trees just 800 m from the Church of Saint Francis, UNESCO World Heritage Site. In our family farm we make small production wines which are the result of our passion and the best expression of our territory. Have fun with Pic nic and Trekking in the vineyards, Apprentice Wine courses, lunch and wine tastings and much more. We'll taste together white and red wines paired with the best local specialties.

“Reflective Retreat!!”
Reviewed January 29, 2014

We visited Saio Winery in August 2013. Agnese was wonderful and allowed us to take a self guided tour that ended in a picnic on the veranda with St. Francis Basilica in the background. Wines were perfect! I also felt like they went above and beyond for me and my mother and sister. We would definitely visit them again!

“The most beautiful place...wonderful wine!”
Reviewed January 27, 2014

My husband, daughter and I spent two weeks in Italy, two nights in each of six cities - Venice, Varenna, Monterosso (Cinque Terre), Florence, Assisi and Rome. The entire trip was a dream come true--with fabulous food and picture-postcard views wherever we turned. The highlight of our trip was the picnic in the vineyard at SAIO on a beautiful sunny day... a simple presentation of salumi, cheese, bread, and a variety of SAIO's wines all set against the backdrop of the basilicas of St. Francis of Assisi in the near distance. We fell in love with the wines and proprietary olive oil as well as Agnese, the daughter who hosted us.

Back in the states, we're now working on our second case of the SAIO San Giovese. Each time we take a sip, we're reminded of that wonderful day. What a treat!

“Fantastic Wine Tasting in Assisi”
Reviewed January 27, 2014

We made a reservation since it was a day trip from Rome & there were 6 in our group. Agnese was there to greet us ~ warm, friendly & great wine & cheese tasting. Agnese made us feel right at home but more importantly, she was very knowledgeable. We also had a private tour of the vineyards - well worth it!

We ordered ALOT of wine which arrived in a timely manner ~ all bottles intact. Strong recommend.

“SAIO WINERY TREK - Well worth the visit”
Reviewed January 27, 2014

What a lovely picturesque afternoon we spent trekking through the vineyards at Saio last October! We were met at the wine shop by Gabriele Commodi . He spoke with affection about the history of Saio and we sampled 3 of their wines before choosing which wine we wanted to include in our picnic lunch. Off we went, across the road to the vineyard with the English Saio guidebook in hand. There were also markers in multiple languages which describe the varietals of grapes which are grown on the property as you wander the fields from varietal to varietal. The guidebook tells the reader about what happens in and about the vineyards through a calendar year as well as describing the wine making process and the grape varietals. The trek is an easy one, not too hilly and well marked. We arrived at our sheltered picnic spot where our lunch awaited us. The foods are all artisanal local products and very tasty. It was a perfect spot to sit, enjoy the countryside with the magnificent view of Assisi, the wonderful Italian foods and of course to sip wine at our leisure. We were all by ourselves! After making our way back to the Wine Shop, we were met by Agnese, where we sampled a bit more wine and made arrangements to have some wine shipped back to Canada. Our wine safely arrived within a week of our return home. We recently enjoyed a lovely Saio Sanjiovese and reminisced about our day at Saio, longing for the day when we can return. What a wonderful memory of our trip to Umbria.
