This was a great place to stay. The farmhouse is beautiful and the view is amazing. They make their own olive oil and it was excellent. We had dinner in the restaurant and the food was delicious and very reasonably priced. The owner was very friendly and helpful.

We were lucky to stay at Le Mandrie for 5 nights and enjoyed everything about the place. Allesandro the owner/host/cat operator/dishwasher repair guy is one of the warmest people we have met anywhere on our travels. He seems to work non stop as he is always there making sure everything is going well.

We had come from a somewhat cramped room in Spoleto so the room here was a delight: large bedroom, modern large bathroom with top of the line fittings and a large sitting room/dining room overlooking the valley. Perfect. As others have said, the food is so good we were not tempted to cook but we could have: lots of plates, glasses, cutlery, pots, pans, cappucino maker etc....You could literally move right in. Nice to have the fridge for beer and white wine. We had dinner at Le Mandrie every night and enjoyed every meal, especially the pasta with truffle and artichoke.. Breakfast is very hearty too. The usual stuff is out but you can also have a cheese and prosciutto platter and cooked egg if you want. We only had all the trimmings twice but man, was it good. Sitting out with a glass of wine before or after dinner and watching the sunsets and the lights in the valley was so enjoyable.

The staff here are outstanding and go out of their way to make you feel welcome in their quiet and unobtrusive way. Not much English is spoken but with our bit of Italian, lots of smiles and sign language we were just fine. Immerse and enjoy.

The road up from Viole is narrow for the first klick but everyone in the neighbourhood is used to watching out and backing up if needed. We met a dump truck several times and no problems. The place is easy to find by the way. You can see it from the highway, way up the mountainside : just go into Viole (San Vitale) and turn uphill at the arch ...follow the signs.

If you have a chance and Alex has time he will show you the new (2011) olive processing plant that he built and tell you the history of his family involvement in agriculture and about the olive harvest /press. Very interesting. The hotel is on 35 hectares of olive trees so the olive oil they serve is grown and pressed on site. We liked it so much we had a 3 L can shipped home.

Nearby is Assisi which, of course, lives up to its world heritage site designation. It's an easy 6 or 7 minute drive away.

We also visited Spello, Gubbio (watch out: confusing drive home if you come back via Gualdo Taldino plus I hate tunnels) , Bevagna, Torgiano and Montefalco as well as doing the drive around the back of Mt. Subasio. It was a busy intinerary.

Below Viole alongside the highway is the quiet little town of Rivotorto. We stopped several times at Bar Pampanoni on the main drag (Via Sagro Tigurio) for gelato, coffee or a spritz...lovely local ladies run it and it has a nice shady patio. Across the street is a Crai supermarket (mini) which has all the stuff you might need for self catering (no meat). These are not tourist places so the prices are very reasonable.

Anyway, we had a fantastic stay at Le Mandrie and give it our highest recommendation. We hope to return one day.

Room Tip: Rooms at the pool end are quieter..we heard a bit of kitchen noise. Try to get the top floor for th...

My husband and I spend four lovely days and nights in Umbria for our wedding anniversary and Le Mandrie di San Paolo exceeded every expectation for a romantic get-away. Alex, who runs the day-to-day operations of the lodging and dining part of this Agriturismo, literally met us in the drive way of the lodge, put us at ease after our slightly harrowing trip by car from Parma (driving in Italy is always exciting!), took us on a mini-tour, and then brought us to one of the most well-appointed rooms I have ever stayed in. We had a HUGE bathroom -- it was actually two connecting rooms -- one with a state of the art glass shower and toilet, and the other with the vanity, a storage area, etc. In the bedroom, there were dressers and the usual items plus a small flat screen TV mounted inconspicuously off to one side. All of the furniture and the huge doors were obviously hand-crafted to special order -- beautiful, heavy, rich wood that all matched throughout the room. A full-sized dining table was near the window with a completely concealed kitchenette along the adjacent wall. The hidden sink, etc. and the cool little refrigertator were adorable. We mainly used it to store wine, but I could see how a family could do a self-catering holiday in one of these huge rooms with ease.

But, with the amazing food being prepared in the kitchen a few doors down, there was never any incentive for us to want to cook. We initially planned on eating only the first night in the restaurant at Le Mandrie so we could dine out at other locations throughout the surrounding hill towns as we explored the area. Instead, we returned every evening by 7:00 knowing that delicious, local and healthy food was waiting for us at the lodge. Not to mention the copious amounts of refreshing wine. And the house specialty -- organic, extra virgin, cold-pressed olive oil that makes even the most jaded taste buds sing. Green gold they should call it. I'm hoarding the bottle we managed to bring back with us for a special occasion.

If you find yourself in Umbria, this is definitely where you should stay.

We booked this not knowing anything about it. What a special person Alex is. All units are essentially new, all wood is solid Birch, just a fabulous place. I regret we couldn't stay longer. Next time we go to the Tuscany and Umbria areas, this will be our base and day trip from here.

It sits on a mountain side above Assisi, night time is just medicinal; looking over the lights of Assisi. Quiet soothing music plays in the evening. He and his staff have dinner every evening there with the guests, and it was one of the better meals he had in Italy, maybe the best!

I just can't say enough great things. By far the best place we stayed in of the several we booked in Italy.

Room Tip: All the rooms are great!

We (family with 2 small children) spent 5 days at Le Mandrie and it was a great experience. The passion and the courage of Alessandro have created a wonderful place where you can relax and feel at home. Staff is very friendly and super flexible. Le Mandrie is great for families and it's in a perfect location if you want to visit the best of Umbria. Definitely a place I would recommend to everyone.

A special place, located out of the crowded city, recommended to relax. The stuff was very friendly, and tried his best to make our stay pleasant. Our room was huge, so we had plenty space to handle a push car and put our child to sleep. The room includes mini kitchen and dinning hall, so we could buy some groceries in the near village and make a simple meal. We found it very useful when traveling with children. Extra shelves and towels hooks would make the room more comfortable. The evening menu was excellent: tasty, local, generous and considering young children (up to request). We had supper almost every day, and after a week the menu was still attractive. The hotel is located a few km uphill, and requires a careful driving.

Room Tip: A room on the second floor has an excellent view and more privacy. For families with young children...

Book this now! It is one of the loveliest places we have ever stayed. The views will literally take your breath away. The agriturismo have been fully renovated in an authentic and charming way, but still has all the modern conveniences you could ever need. The food is delicious-stay for dinner as well as breakfast and don't miss a swim in the infinity pool at night-it is truly magical. I can't say enough about the warm hospitality, excellent facilities, delicious food and stunning environment.
