“Overpriced, don't go”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 3, 2012

A lovely elegant dining room inside a historic palazzo....beautiful artwork, lovely setting, elegant tables....after that, it's downhill. My husband and I spent New Year's Eve dinner here. We were chuckling the whole time about expecting a romantic, quiet, elegant dinner to celebrate the New Year, and we couldn't wait to escape.
Food was OK, not particularly good. Fish dishes were very "fishy"; rest was just ok. IN all fairness, service was excellent. The dining room was lit super brightly-blinding in fact; who wants to have an elegant dinner with spotlights in your face? The one candlestick on our table was wasted because the room was so uncomfortably bright. But the absolute worse part was the "live music" they advertised. It consisted of a table of people who took turns eating and singing, with the most absolute horrid voices and sounds....the dinner music played via recorded radio in between the live performances, was so loud that my husband and I had to use sign language...this was the dinner music. Not a soul got up to dance and one woman spent her night signaling to stab herself as the rest of her table laughed. The "music" was brash, deafening, horrible sounding and the singer was an absolute disaster--it was really bad. We escaped right after midnight...disappointing night which cost us 120 Euros plus tips per person----that's about $350--at least we had a few laughs about it. Outside in the piazza there was a free fireworks performance and a fun band....happy new year!

“Everything was terrific until the steak”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 25, 2009

The restaurant appears to have been fashioned out of an old Roman cavern and is a feast for the eye. The tables had nice linens and pewter chargers at each place setting. In terms of anticipation, ours could not have been higher. We had a terrific antipasto and tagliatelle with trufles. The local Umbrian red was very good. On the recommendation of the waiter, we ordered a steak for two. It came out on a sizzling platter and looked wonderful. It was cut into strips. The restaurant did not have steak knives, just simple knives and flatware. Neither of us could cut the steak, much less eat more than a few small pieces that we managed to excise from the muscle. I try to be polite even in such circumstances but felt obliged to tell the waiter that this was 'il peggiore' -- the worst steak I had ever had. He was apologetic, and when the bill came it did not include the charge for the steak.

“Umbrian haute cuisine”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 23, 2009

We enjoyed a simply sublime meal here in early June. The atmosphere is a wonderful mix of medieval and modern, with vaulted ceilings, exposed stone, and wrought iron chandeliers paired charmingly with modern art. For appetizers, we enjoyed excellent tuna tartare. Our primi were deconstructed lasagna and pasta with a traditional Umbrian pigeon ragu (I'll never look at pigeons the same way again - yes, I know they're not the same type of pigeons). For main courses, I had a superb black angus fillet while my husband enjoyed chicken breast stuffed with lamb (turducken, eat your heart out). The fruit plate dessert was a work of art, and the homemade sorbets were refreshing. Small chocolate "coins" of varying cocoa percentages and orgins provided a perfect end to the meal.

These folks take their drinks seriously too - the wine menu is extensive and there's even a water menu. Normally I'd consider a water menu pretentious, but this one listed mostly well-known Italian and European brands, dividing them by sodium levels, so it was actually rather educational.

Service was uniformly excellent and attentive, and the prices were significantly lower than what one would pay for a comparable meal in Rome. We'd strongly recommend La Locanda to anyone looking for a fine dining experience in Assisi.

“Wonderful”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 18, 2009

We dropped in on a weekday for lunch in the lase week of April. They open at 12:30. We ended up staying 3 hours, with four courses and two wines (by the bottle and the glass). The service was personal, the chef came out to discuss the various dishes with us and help with the selection. We were offered half portions of the pasta course which enabled us to go on to the second course and dessert. Everything, except the wine, is house made and really delightful. The various dishes were interesting, the flavors complimentary and everything was carefully and properly prepared. Pricing was reasonable. We spent about what we would spend in a typical good restaurant in the Bay Area. It was like being someone's very well appointed dining room. The building, like everything in Assisi, is stone. The ceilings are vaulted stone. All of the appointments are beautiful and include antique pieces local to the area. We would go back to Assisi just to have dinner and there are plenty of good reasons to go to Assisi. Staff was very patient with our very limited Italian. The chef has been spending part of each year teaching at the various culinary academies in the United States, including the California Culinary Academy.
