Very complex flavors!! Lovely surroundings! Only thing is they don't take credit cards at all--We sat at a table with other people -which was fine. Delicious cantucinni and vin santo. Reasonably priced. Would return.

We were looking for a restaurant listed in the 2012 Frommer's book which was closed and ended up at the police station. Note: do not buy the Frommer's book, not worth it. The police told us the restaurant has been closed for a long time and recommended Hosteria Il Carroccio. The restaurant was tiny and packed (a very good sign ). The food was yummy and the service was great. This place is well worth visiting.

We usually choose our restaurants by strolling the streets in the evening and looking in the windows to see how full the tables are and what the general "vibe" is. This place won hands down with lots of laughter, only Italian being spoken, and warm personal greetings indicting that everyone seemed to know everyone. We made a booking for the following day for dinner and were also greeted warmly and included in the lively banter. Food was tasty (we asked for a recipe and got it!), service friendly, and even the house dog was well-behaved (we sat next to him).

Wandering around the streets of Siena, we saw the awards in the window and decided to check it out. The restaurant is right near the piazza de campo. The slow food labels attracted me. Luckily, we were on an American dining schedule and we able to be seated at sevenish without reservations. The house wine was smooth and reasonably priced. The food (primi plattis) came quickly and everything looked lovely. I had a unusual combo of pumpkin and ricotta lasagna. It was topped with raisins, which were unnecessary. The dessert (a cake with marscapone cheese and Nutella) was rich and beautiful on the plate. We walked out stuff for less than twenty euro each. How do people eat multiple courses? For friendliness and simple tastiness, thumbs up.

We heard about Il Carroccio from our travel agent. It was a little late to make reservations and we didn't have a phone. We showed up on their doorstep just as they opened, and they seated us immediately, even though we didn't have a reservation. Then we watched as they turned away every other supplicant for an unreserved table. We ordered the menu degustazione, the tasting menu. The waiter offered to tell us what we would have, but we preferred the surprise. We opened with a typical Italian antipasto plate, except that the pate on the crostini was made from beef spleen and was astonishingly good. The soup was ribollita, a blissful bean soup thickened with bread. We had some sort of homemade pasta that was delectable, and then a veal stew that blew us away. Dessert was almond biscotti with vin santo. Throughout the meal, the owner of the restaurant checked with us about our reactions to the food. At the end of the evening, over a complimentary glass of grappa, we shook hands, embraced, and went on our way. The bill was completely reasonable. The service was exemplary, and we cannot wait to return to Siena and visit this wonderful restaurant again. Just be sure to make a reservation.
