My meal consisted of
--The richest, most lucious potato gnocchi with cheese sauce covered in truffles
--Roasted rabbit and root vegetables, covered in white truffles
--Watching a friend's risotto being finished in a wheel of pecorino cheese--the cheese melted into the risotto
--Running into a couple of friends from our trip who thought they could sneak off for their fifth anniversary dinner until we ran into them. They had eaten here on their honeymoon, and when they told the chef, he made them a torte. Which my friends later shared with us.

Beautiful ambience, special service, outstanding food. An essential Siena experience.

This restaurant was highly recommended by our hotel.
In addition, it is ranked #2 on Trip Advisor in a city full of great food!~
Therefore our expectations might have been too high.
the food was good, not great.
The setting was unusual.
overall a good expereince but we had better while in Siena.

The review by Monica P really summed up our experience too. The atmosphere was entrancing, the staff warm and friendly and the food...presented beautifully and delicious beyond description. Our total bill was not cheap but was totally reasonable considering that almost a third of it was a wine splurge. The polenta and truffle starter was completed at the table as the waiter shaved a generous amount of truffle over the polenta base. One nice thing about the cave setting is that the perfume of the truffles had nowhere to go but to surround us...even the other diners were swooning a bit. That sounds totally over the top but is the truth. That dish was 10 euro...not outrageous considering the quality. I also had the risotto dentra the pecorino wheel and it was the best risotto I have ever eaten. Creamy, perfectly cooked and perfectly seasoned. If you are in Siena, go here. Period.

You must book to be sure of a table and you should have one of the cullinary experiences outside of Michelin 3* establishments. You can select the ground floor where the tables are set in a space no wider than 3.5m but with a tall ceiling and rough brick walls and a wonderful painting of the owners wife dominating the end wall, or down below ground in spaces carved from the Etruscan rock!

Everything we ate was top class. Try a truffle based appetiser and go from there....

You must not miss this if you are in Siena, and it should not break the bank.
