Apart to going to see most of the important attractions in Siena, I had also some free time to go around the city of Siena and it really left me with no words due to the immense beauty it is surrounded with. Also there are good restaurants were one can go to eat and relax.

Just few places in Europe can compete against the majestic Siena. Siena is well known for its architecture, historical buildings and the Palio (its horse race held twice a year: july and august), but the most attractive aspect is the atmosphere you can feel and breath once you crossed the city walls: the pure essence of middle ages.

We have heard about Siena and wanted to visit the city for years. Touring Tuscany, we took the opportunity to have a day and an evening in Siena. Staying in San Gimignano, the trip to Siena is relatively easy, around 45 minutes to an hour away. We had identified a couple of possible car parks, and found the first of these quite easily (well sign posted), choosing the Fortezza car park, which is an extensive flat / open car park, surrounding the old fort. Arriving at about 11 a.m. We found it very busy, with cars struggling to find spaces. We were really fortunate and parked within minutes, but if we visited again, I would plan to get there much earlier.
From this car park, to the heart of the old city, is a walk of about 15 minutes.
The city is reputed to be a smaller version of Florence. We thought the feel of the city was far different. In some ways the city appears more ancient than Florence, and less 'decorated'. It is a beautiful city, and in the traditions of the place, you can see that it is a living history. During the day we looked at most of the notable sights, albeit by the evening we knew about it - walking miles in 37deg heat. We left the city in the late evening, and walking around at 11pm we still felt very safe.

Just go and revel in the architecture, atmosphere and buzz. Ignore the tourists they will flow around you. The art and artifacts are pretty good too.

We visited the historical center of Siena on a blistering August afternoon, just a day before the August 16 Palio event, so the place was packed with locals and tourists alike. Still, it was nice to discover historic and beautifully restored buildings at almost every corner. Definitely a must visit for those vacationing in Tuscany. Beware that you'll have to climb many stairs....
