Numero Unico is an absolute delight and I would not hesitate in recommending this restaurant for those visiting Siena. I approached it from a side street and there was no-one seated at the outdoor terrace, which was a little uninspiring. The menu looked interesting and as I was reading this the chef came out and invited us to take a table inside. The interior is cool in shades of grey and white. The restaurant is split across several dining rooms and we sat at the front overlooked by two huge black and white photos of Palio crowd scenes from the 1960s, stylish and interesting.
The food is wonderful, I had lovely soft gnocchi to start, see photos, served in a vibrant pesto sauce. I followed this with a lovely tender, herb crusted pork dish served with the most wonderful vegetable cakes. This was my favourite dish during my two week stay in Italy. The wine is good too and one can buy a glass of very good red for Eur8. A 2 course lunch for 4 including wine, water, covers etc came to Eur150 which is good value given the location of the restaurant and the superb quality of the food and wine.
Service is friendly and efficient and the waiting staff were happy to listen to our poor Italian and speak in English as and when required. There is free WiFi too!
