There are some lovely paintings in the gallery. But the lighting is terrible, bloody terrible and all floors arnt open at once. Most frustrating

I don't really want to talk about the collection: it's perfectly fine--there are 37 galleries arranged in chronological order to go through. There was nobody there except for the three of us. What I want to talk about is the staff. One woman in particular, whose name I unfortunately did not get, went out of her way to assist us. She explained very carefully about the terms under which we could take photographs and kept apologizing for the paper work required to make this happen. After we had finished, we were too tired to walk back to our hotel. She called a taxi for us, and then walked with us out of the museum to make sure we got into the right cab. She didn't have to do any of that. We were extremely appreciative.

Icons and frescos starting from the 12th century and working their way to the 18th, it was quite a procession that we had in an empty gallery that seemed to invite contemplation. And there were little surprises like the depiction of Saint Joseph sitting apart from the Virgin and child with his head resting on his opened hand in a thinkers's position, knees apart, as though he is wondering what was his part in all the commotion-- a very human touch not often seen.

If you are at all interested in Sienese paintings this is a magnificent collection. On the other hand it is understaffed, underlit, lacking in information of any sort and generally sad. In many ways it is a throwback to how Italian museums were forty years ago. There is no guidebook available, no postcards and precious little to be found elsewhere in Siena. Why it is like this in a city that relies so heavily on tourists is a mystery, perhaps they don't need to bother. Difficult to know how to rate it on a site such as this. For the collection five stars, for the experience overall two stars would be generous.
