“Magnificent collection, but......................”
Reviewed September 20, 2013

If you are at all interested in Sienese paintings this is a magnificent collection. On the other hand it is understaffed, underlit, lacking in information of any sort and generally sad. In many ways it is a throwback to how Italian museums were forty years ago. There is no guidebook available, no postcards and precious little to be found elsewhere in Siena. Why it is like this in a city that relies so heavily on tourists is a mystery, perhaps they don't need to bother. Difficult to know how to rate it on a site such as this. For the collection five stars, for the experience overall two stars would be generous.

“Not really for the casual tourist”
Reviewed June 19, 2013

Seeing all the rave reviews of the Pinacoteca, I have to say (as someone who extensively studied Italian Renaissance art history as a grad student) that this museum is really for aficionados. It's not the Uffizi. Yes, the collection of Sienese icons is priceless, but it's probably not for the casual tourist with limited time or who has no background in altarpiece painting traditions. Much better to see altarpieces "in situ" in Tuscany's many churches.

“A must visit!”
Reviewed June 4, 2013

I thought that after visiting the Uffizi, Academia (Venice and Florence), the Italian section of the Louvre, and Rome plus many other true jewels of Italian art, there was nothing new I could find in this museum. Was I wrong! We all know the great masters and their disciples, but there is so much more! …so much beautiful and breathtaking work by practically unknown creators, because then it was mainly ‘work’, not only 'art' what made these people take brushes on their hands. For four euros per adults (discounts avail.), the museum has 3 floors covering chronologically different centuries of Siena art. You'll find the works of great talented ones such as Beccafumi, Vanni, Casolani, Manetti, Mei, Martini, Lorenzetti, plus much more. The staff even guides you so you follow the exhibitions as they have designed to be seen. Just like in those little and hidden churches in Italy that you discover amazing work of art, so is this place. If you do love art, you must see this.

“Don't miss this museum”
Reviewed December 9, 2012

We had forgotten what a superb collection of early Sienese art this is. You can take photos, unlike at the Uffizi.
