When in Siena make a trip to the old city archives in Banchi de Sotto. Not easy to find, go inside the courtyard and up the stairs to a locked door. Free visits are offered at 930, 1030 and 1130 am to look at some of the old painted leather and wooden covers used for binding medieval documents. They date back to the 13th century. All fascinating, and an added bonus being able to walk out onto a narrow balcony which has a magnificent view onto the Piazza di Campo.
