This place has wonderful views of the city and is very close to Sienna..Loved the place and the staff was very helpful in planning our trip. The breakfast and dinner here is the best..So do not miss the breakfast for sure.

A very peculiar place, old-worldly, old-fashioned, luxurious but laid-back. The hotel is in a delightful garden, a real park that is painstakingly kept, and provides ample opportunity to relax to your heart's content. Service is meticulous and very friendly. To visit Siena, we took the bus one way and the taxi the other - the latter cost ten euros and less than ten minutes. Which means that Scacciapensieri combines a Tuscan rural holiday - in well-appointed and exceedingly comfortable surroundings - with a convenient visit to the most stunning medieval town in Europe.
The very good restaurant and its very friendly and knowledgeable staff, capable of counseling you on food and wine in several languages, would deserve a review of its own - let's just say that if you sleep at Scacciapensieri and are too lazy to go to town to look for dinner, there is nothing to regret if you eat here, and if you stay in town overnight but wish to get a break from it for the evening, there is good reason to come here just for the dinner.

Room Tip: Don't think there are any bad rooms.

The Villa is on a hilltop with beautiful views of the Tuscan countryside, though the grounds may be showing a little age and the busy street at the entrance robs it of some of the ambiance. But the small garden is lovely, the rooms sizable and comfortable, and the staff uniformly cheery and helpful.

As others have correctly noted, the Villa is stuck in between being in the country and being in the city. Walking to Siena is not really feasibly, especially with the busy main street. Driving should you have a rental car is certainly doable, though parking in Siena is a bear. As others have, we found the bus that stops directly outside the hotel the easiest option.

The relative remoteness of the Villa means you must either eat dinner before returning for the night, or at their restaurant, which is heavily pushed by all the staff. We did not opt to dine at the restaurant, but were pleased with the breakfast offerings.

We used the Villa as a jumping off point for day trips to Tuscan villages, many of which are within about a 40 minute drive. You must navigate a series of roundabouts to get to and from the Villa, so a GPS is certainly recommended.

Visiting Siena again we might opt to stay closer to the city proper, but the rooms and excellent service still lead us to recommend Villa Scacciapensieri to those looking for such an experience.

My wife and I stayed here 6 nights last Oct 2013 and enjoyed our stay. Room was clean and spacious. The hotels staff was cordial and helpful. The restaurant staff was friendly and provided good service. The food was good to very good. The hotel is a short rise outside the city wall but we liked the location and the grounds. It was quiet and had good views of the city.

We stayed at Villa Scacciapensieri for 7 nights in late October of 2013. While it had a lot of good things going for it, I got the distinct sense that this hotel's better days were behind it and management needs to work on some issues sooner than later. This was one of the more decisive reviews I've written, and I wavered between a 3 and a 4 several times, but in the end I think the drawbacks slightly outweigh the benefits of this property.

Brief Review:

The Good: Beautiful Property, Excellent Service, Great Free Breakfast

The Bad: Awkward location, Poor Sleep Quality, Dinner at the Restaurant

Detailed Review:

We had a generally pleasant stay here, and while the issues were few, they were big.

The Good:

This property is really beautiful and almost exactly what you'd expect when envisioning a Tuscan Villa. There are quite a few gardens and outdoor terraces, and some great views. We spent two full morning just reading and enjoying these surroundings. The pool was closed for the season when we were there, but it looked nice too.

The Villa can't have more than 20 rooms, roughly split into town-home style accommodations in a detached building and more hotel-style accommodations in the main building that also houses the restaurant and lounge.

The service was top notch, for all the staff. Everyone took their job very seriously and had pride in their work, and it showed.

The free included breakfast was outstanding; I'd say it's continental plus. You have your standard fare of cold cuts and cheese, cereal, bread, etc, but you can also order a few hot items free of charge, like a hard boiled egg or a cappuccino.

The Bad:

The location of the hotel isn't really ideal for seeing Siena or touring the country side....kind of a worst of both worlds scenario. I researched this Villa before booking, and judging from the pictures I saw and satellite overviews from Google Maps, I thought it was more of a country location, ideal for a base camp for exploring the Tuscan country-side. It is not. The Villa is actually in a very urban setting, complete with a high-traffic road not more than 20 feet from one of the accommodation buildings. And remember, Italian traffic includes Vespas, with their piercing engines.

Getting to and from the Villa is challenging by car and bus. I have driven all over Italy and France, so please take my advice and plan to have patience when you are looking for this hotel....you will definitely get lost by car. Regardless of how you approach Siena, you will need to navigate through half a dozen traffic circles, some of which have very bad traffic. My best advice would be to look for the 'Camping' signs when getting close as there is a camp ground not far from the Villa.

While difficult to approach from the country, the hotel also isn't ideally situated to tour Siena. You'll spend at least 45 minutes taking a bus to and from the historic centre, when you factor in the 20 minute bus ride, an average of waiting 15 minutes for the bus, and then an additional 10 minute walk from where the bus drops you off outside the historic centre. It actually takes the same amount of time to walk we discovered.

With the bus you don't have to worry about getting lost so much as dealing with the spotty service of local buses. My experience with European buses is that their schedules usually have more exceptions than rules, and the 2 lines that run to the hotel fit that description. The lines have regular interruptions in the middle of the day, and one of the lines doesn't run past 8PM. The combination of these factors makes it difficult to enjoy a day or night out on town as getting back to the hotel is always uncertain. I would actually recommend a taxi for a day or evening trip to Siena, despite the expense.

Another negative part of the Villa is the poor sleep quality, the result of loud nearby traffic, very thin walls, and bedding that really needs to be updated. Our pillows basically felt like a bathroom towel folded in half, they had absolutely no cushioning, and the mattresses weren't much better. The thin walls basically mean you are the mercy of whoever comes home the latest and gets up the earliest, we found it quite difficult to sleep until everyone was in their rooms and down for the night. You will be getting up at 7AM every day, unless you're a very heavy sleeper.

For dinner, the restaurant served what I would say was average food given the culinary proclivity of the region. This means the food was good by international standards, but the prices were literally the highest we paid anywhere in Tuscany.

Additionally, the ambiance in this restaurant is awkward. It's exceptionally quiet and has no liveliness. They need to play some background music....it's so quiet you can hear a pin drop and as a result everyone is whispering their tables. The other guests were quite varied by age and nationality, but this restaurant seemed like it catered to very stuffy seniors exclusively.

I would not recommend this restaurant for the food unless you're stuck...in Siena you will find much more lively and atmospheric places, which serve better food for less money.

We stayed at this property several years ago. I was not active on TripAdvisor at the time, so was not able to review it at that time. But, I think about this inn often. For example, we had an early train on the morning of our departure. The front desk associate insisted we eat some sort of breakfast, even though serving hours had not begun. He said he could not offer everything, but had somebody roll out the cereal cart for us so we could get a healthy start to the day. Another wonderful memory was the duck we had in the restaurant on late arrival our first evening. We were so impressed that I e-mailed the hotel shortly after our return for the recipe. Caroline responded with a translated to English version of the recipe so we could try to duplicate at home (which was nearly impossible since the dish was fantastic)! The ambiance of this hotel was only surpassed by the superb customer service we received. We experience a lasting feeling of being part of the Nardi family, with the inn's extra care to make sure we had great memories even when we were leaving and after we returned home. They truly went above & beyond!

This hotel is very difficult to locate once you get off the highway. The place itself is very attractive . Our room was poor but after a day of stressful travel we weren't about to complain. I did have a suspicious itchy feeling after sleeping here a couple of nights. There were ants in our room. Bruce was great, he helped us to plan day trips and sent us to some really beautiful places. We thought the restaurants in Siena which were recommended by the hotel were expensive and not very good. There are lots of problems with wifi in this hotel. Coverage is scarce. Guests were mostly American. The views are very nice and the gardens are most enjoyable. The hotel is about a *** but our room was very sub standard.

Room Tip: Don't accept room 42 the bathroom is tiny and there are twin beds pushed together to make a king
