We stayed at the Albergo Bernini for 2 nights on a 7 night Italian fly/drive for 85 Euros with no breakfast—outrageous once we saw the room (#2). Although it was clean and large, it was painted sour apple green; the bed reflected the hills and valleys of Tuscany (my husband took the day bed the second night). The only amenity was a fan. The bathroom was adequate. It was extremely noisy on Saturday night and kids on the street threw coins through our open window. (I appreciated the donation.) The décor of the room and the whole hotel resembled early flea market.

Albergo Bernini was everything we had hoped for and more! My mom, sister, and I learned about this hotel from Rick Steve's guidebooks and PBS program. As usual, Rick did not let us down. Our three person room was extremely spacious, very clean, charming, reasonably priced, and the view of Old Siena and the Duomo was spectacular. Our host, Mauro, made us feel right at home from the moment we arrived. The location cannot be beat as it is within the heart of the shopping district and a short walking distance to the il Campo and Piazza San Domenico. We were a bit hesitant at first to share a bathroom with other guests, but this turned out to be no trouble at all. While their breakfast is a bit pricey for what is offered, I recommend ordering it at least once because you will be hard pressed to ever find a more breathtaking view in which to sip on cappuccino and enjoy Italian pastries. We were only able to stay two nights, but we would have been happy to have spent a week there. We will definitely be coming back to Siena, and Albergo Bernini's is the only place we will want to stay. As an aside, I highly recommed taking one of the Cor Magis Travel Joinable Winery Tours. We went on the Chianti Tour, which turned out to be the highlight of our 2-week European backpacking trip. You can book it through the B&B, but you'll bypass the extra fee if you book it yourself at the Tourist Info booth just up the hill at Piazza San Domenico.

This was a great location, but the rooms were too small. While coming and going (between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m.), we had a sense that we were invading the owner's home. The staff wasn't partciularly friendly, and my mom saw a bug or two in the bathroom. On the plus side, it was very convenient , quiet, and had a nice view.

From the moment we walked into the Bernini and Mauro, the owner, introduced himself and shook our hands, we felt like we were staying with the family in Siena. Our room was large, comfortable, charming, and had everything we needed (no TV, but I had had enough Italien TV by that time). The bed was firm and the bathroom was quite serviceable, though the shower with no enclosure took some getting used to. The internet point was a big plus with me, and reasonably priced too. We loved the central location near St. Catherine's head and an easy walk to Il Campo, restaurants, sites, etc. We took our breakfast at Nanini bar near the Dominican church, with a stop at Bar Sport on the way into town. The breakfast at the Bernini was just too high priced for us. Great Osteria downstairs below the hotel and went to 2 others near the Campo that satisfied as well. Mauro finally pulled out his famous accordian on our last afternoon while we were in the room resting up, and I'll always remember how wonderfully he played. We loved Siena and the Bernini and recommend it to the discriminatling traveler.

Three of us stayed at this Hotel last week-- we had one of the apartments just down the street (one double, one pull out couch)-- 120E per night.

The room was expensive for what it was-- very outdated, very thin walls, and a dark, smoky entryway-- but it served the purpose and was in a great location.

The water was often cold and while the room was made up in the second day, we weren't given enough towels and had to go ask for more.

Bottom Line--- stay here if you need to, but try to find something a little better for the cost.

Note: The restaurant around the corner is great for lunch. They squeeze you in with other diners, but the food is great and the cost reasonable.

We were so lucky to stay in the apartments during the Palio it was so much fun to be part of a neighborhood. We were traveling with our 4 17-21 daughters and we had the top 2 apartments. We felt welcome and very at home there. You have to climb the hill for a map or directions but you can also stop halfway for gelato!!! Enjoy!!

We stayed in the apartments down the street from the main hotel and we were very happy. We were a little hesitant at first but it turned out to be very nice. As you know, Siena is very hilly, and walking out of the Bernini you turn right, then another right and look straight down, very steep!! You think, man, I am going to roll right down but you manage, then go into the building.. up the flight of stairs which they will proudly tell you, are a thousand years old, we had the first apartment and our friends went up a second flight of stairs and had the attic loft apt. It was beautifully done. There was nothing spectacular but it fit our needs. In our apartment, we had a hutch with the owners grandparents pictures in there. Very sweet. You open the windows and listen to Italy going by....parents yelling at kids, women laughing. For breakfast you go to the hotel and if the owner sees you, he says well breaksfast not ready but would you like music? You say yes and he gladly pulls out his accordian and serenades you. He says, come back tonight for my recital, you come back and it is just you but thats okay because he is happy. He is very nice and speaks no English but the accordian...the language of love. I would recommend this hotel to everyone. The family was the friendliest and they made our stay delightful.
The rooms are clean, they are not expensive, they are very much a family place. We will be back.
By the way, ask about the different districts and they will give you the history. Wonderful
