“What a disappointment!!”
Reviewed October 5, 2004

On arrival at the hotel Pensione Palazzo Ravizza we were impressed with the friendly greeting at reception, the beautiful decor of the ground floor and the relaxing gardens. However, room 37 (a superior room) was a completely different matter. We were on Honeymoon and felt as though we were staying at a convent. The stark decor, dirty, bare and cold floors. Old, cheap and chipped furniture. Noisy roadside view. Bathroom- dingy and shower unit dirty. Basically we had a room which had been stripped of all the basic comforts one would expect of any hotel. (I have stayed at better hostels). We could not stay one night in this room and subsequently moved to another hotel. We would not recommend this hotel for fear that someone else may have a similar experience to ours.

The Palazzo Ravizza is conveniently located and the staff is extremely friendly and helpful. Our room was very large but somewhat dark, with no useful light for reading. It needed a standing lamp for the armchairs. The room also faced the street which is very busy and noisy with bright lights all night. In addition, the church next door rang its chimes every hour, with one chime on the half hour. Unfortunately, by government decree the air conditioning was turned off (beginning of fall) and the room was very hot. We had a choice of keeping the shutters closed to keep out the noise and light, while putting up with the heat, or opening the windows to cool off while admitting a lot of noise and light. Neither was very satisfactory.

Breakfast was excellent, with a large choice of meats, cheeses pastries, etc., as was the restaurant where we ate dinner the first night there. Parking is convenient and the back garden is lovely. Views from the rooms facing the back are spectacular, overlooking the garden and valley outside the city walls. Free internet service is available.

We would stay here again, but only if we could get a room facing the rear.

We stayed at five different hotels while traveling in Italy. This was hands down, our favorite! Absolutely beautiful! High wood beam ceilings, decent size rooms, and shutter windows that open out over the courtyard/hills of Tuscany. Breakfast is served in the courtyard (weather permitting) with incredible views. Several areas on the ground floor to read, play games, use the computer (free for guests) or just enjoy your quiet time. Very friendly and helpful staff as well as free parking. We would definitely stay here again.

this is a very pretty hotel w/ lovely grounds and courtyard, as well as a pretty interior. i got the loft room, which at only 80 euros was a great deal. the room was HUGE and had what i think may have been a king bed even. the bathroom w/ tub was gorgeous and extremely spacious. my only minor complaints are that the small tv is situated on a desk far from the bed, making it hard to watch, and that the bedspread and chair upholstery looked kind of faded. the hotel is inside the city wall but toward a far end, so when i walked to and from the hotel at nite i didn't feel entirely safe, especially considering the relative lack of street lighting in that area, tho that is certainly no fault of the hotel itself. the breakfast was excellent, with a very wide selection of sausage/bacon (which i don't eat) and copious scrambled eggs, etc. do stay there if in siena and do request the loft room if you want a change of pace (meaning: space) in europe.

Amazing hotel within the city walls at Porta Laterina. Breakfast out on the patio was great, but dinner was a little spendy for all the hype. Did not give this hotel an excellent rating only because the bathroom facilities, while being very modern, allowed smells to come back through the pipes... as if they hadn't properly plumbed it to keep from smelling the septic tank. Would highly suggest a garden-side room, as the street noise ~even in this small town~ can be a problem. Internet right in the lobby; private parking on the garden side of the hotel for those of us who took the the countryside with their Citroens.

There are many, many good things to say about this hotel, and we'd stay again. It is an easy hotel to find entering the city from the south. Walking distance wise, it's 10 min. from Duomo, but since Sienna is spread out, Ravizza tends to be less central than some hotels. It was a 25 min walk from a concert we went to as well as a cooking class (at the Sienna Culture Center -we highly recommend it). Parking your car after checking in is a bit of an adventure, and you may want to take the bellboy with you in the car to help find the turnoff street.
Staff is very nice and friendly with good assistance in finding things. Interior of the hotel is somewhat dark and ambience of the lobby and sitting areas inside was fairly ordinary. This may be a consideration if the weather is less than ideal, because the real winner is the garden setting behind the hotel, which is a great place to have lunch or drinks at night (and also serves as the setting for breakfast). Breakfasts had very good variety also. One of the best (if not the best) on our trip. Also, internet access was free and reasonably quick at one of two computers in the lobby area.
We stayed in one of the suites overlooking the garden, and while our room was nice, it wasn't sensational. Furnishings were showing signs of age,and the bathroom, while spacious with an interior jacuzzi, wasn't the most spotless or sumptious. Our biggest complaint was that the hot water didn't work well in shower either AM so these were very quick events.
All in all, there were many more pluses than minuses and it's a very solid, fairly priced place. You can't go wrong staying here.
