“Charming hotel in a beautiful city...”
Reviewed April 29, 2011

My husband and I finally took our long-overdue honeymoon this month. We went to Paris, Rome, Siena, and Florence. Needless to say, this trip involved a great deal of planning and research. TripAdvisor has been a vital resource for me, all of the reviewers' comments helped us to ensure a wonderful vacation so this is my way of returning the favour. On to the review...

In Siena, we booked the Palazzo Ravizza, the most traditional of the 5 hotels we stayed at during our entire trip. This place oozes charm (a little detail: no key card, they give you an actual key for your room) and the breathtaking view from our room is worth every euro we spent on a suite. My husband and I typically book modern boutique hotels, but in Siena, the Palazzo Ravizza was the perfect choice.

The hotel is within the city walls, a short 5-minute walk to the Duomo (gorgeous) and a 10-minute walk to the Piazza del Campo. Siena is hilly, and the main route from the hotel to the city center, albeit short, is a tiny bit of an uphill climb. I think it will be fine for most people though.

The continental breakfast selection is limited but of high quality. You can choose to have breakfast in the spacious, well-appointed dining room or on a gorgeous sunny morning, take it outside to the beautiful garden facing the country hillside. If you choose to stay connected to the outside world, they offer free internet access in the rooms (cable provided).

Siena was everything we hoped it would be - relaxing, romantic, beautiful. I was reminded of that every day of our stay at the Palazzo Ravizza.

Some tips:

1. Dining: La Taverna di San Giuseppe, 15-minute walk from the hotel - best food we had in Italy, a tad pricey but worth it. Reservations required as they are pretty well-known among locals and tourists alike. Bistecca Fiorentina and Pici with Wild Boar sauce are musts!

2. Do your research on pricing - check multiple travel websites, check the hotel website for any special offers, even call the hotel to see if they would offer an advanced booking discount (typically non-refundable, discounts will range between 10-15% on top of the best rate - based on my experience).

3. VAT refund for non-EU citizens: Minimum purchase is 155 euros from the same retailer on the same day. The option of an immediate cash refund is available at select locations in the city, make sure to ask the retailer for details.

Sister & I traveled to Italy this Spring. Siena & especially Pensione Palazzo Ravizza were the highlight of our trip..From Rome, to Florence, to Cinque Terre, to Orivieto....Nothing beat the Palazzo Ravizza. Nothing.

1) The staff was exceptionally warm & helpful. Even the breakfast barista remembered how I liked my morning coffee (do not use the machine. They brew a wonderful cap).
Front desk helped us with tours, restaurants & reservations. Lovely to work with-
Restored breakfast room, library, manicured gardens, family chapel.
(Ask for a brochure detailing the history of the Palazzo Ravizza)

The breakfast was more than I expected. Apparently they have a new bakery supplying the morning bread. AMAZINGLY good. Daily big wheel of cheese, salami's, fresh , juices, creamy yogurts. Very, very good & beautifully presented.

2) We did NOT have a view of the gardens, nor the countryside...we were not bothered by the street noise. Hotel has two sets of windows. Our room had stencils on the high walls, clean floors, safe in the room, thick towels, towel warmer, tub & nice bath products. Very clean bathroom!
Hotel also provided on site gated parking. Although I suggest you 'ditch' the car in Siena. Streets are very narrow. Scooters & cars in & out of traffic. Walk, cab or take a tour to the wonderful nearby hilltop towns. Worth your time & money.

3) We were close enough to walk to the Duomo daily. I enjoyed the fact we were out of the congestion of the Duomo. Siena is a very walkable city.

I HIGHLY recommend this hotel to anyone who plans on visiting Siena.
Newlyweds, seniors, families as well as small groups.

I only wish the bathroom had better lighting...Now how 'minimal' of a concern is that??

We stayed one night in this hotel for a visit to Sienna. Ten minute walk to all the sites, so conveniently located. The staff was very nice and helpful, the gardens are lovely with a beautiful view, and the continental breakfast was quite good. We also relaxed on the garden overlooking the countryside with a nice bottle of wine and watched the sun set on a gorgeous sunny day. The free, fenced in parking was also a nice plus!

The bad: The room, #23, was facing the street. I asked for a garden view room, and was told one was not available, only a suite. With two people, a suite is not necessary. Oh, how I wish I paid the extra money for the upgrade. The noise from the street at night alternated between mopeds, shouting between people, and the bell tower clanging. And then the automatic air started based upon the temperature in the room in the middle of the night, when I had somehow managed to finally fall asleep, when the rattling of the air conditioner, or whatever is was supposed to be, started in, and my first thought was, who would be drilling at this time of night? I didn't figure out what was causing the noise until the morning arrived. This went on ALL NIGHT LONG. Also, the beds. SUPER hard and uncomfortable. Nobody asked how our stay was when we checked out, so we didn't say anything to the front desk.

Room Tip: Pay whatever you need to have a garden view room.

If you want one of these impersonal cloned business hotels this is not for you. However if you want a very comfortable hotel with great views very friendly staff and a good breakfast then it is for you. We really enjoyed this hotel It is idiosyncratic but that only adds to its charm. It was very comfortable and if you have a room overlooking the garden then you will be hard pushed to find a better view from your bedroom window anywhere in the world Add to that the very friendly and helpful staff and an excellent location for the Duomo, Campo etc. and you will be hard piushed to find anything better

Here's the problem with this hotel: get a view of Tuscan countryside and you will pay dearly on the other hand get a decent room rate and you will have a view of the street and the morning noise. Old building loaded with charm and history. A bit of walk to town center but it's a fun walk. No valet parking altho most of Italy looked at me like i was nuts when i asked for it altho in fairness parking was easy. Our room was huge even by U.S. standards.

We did sit out at night in the back and we were the only ones there which was really nice.

Room Tip: view or no view...you have to decide

We got to stay one great night in Siena. The town itself is wonderful and the Palazzo Ravizza was very nice. We had a superior room and had a fantastic view! The hotel is on the edge of the city and thus we had a view looking out over Tuscany. The room was a good size for Europe. It had two club chairs that we pulled in front of the window to watch the sunset. Again, it was a great view. The hotel also had a pretty courtyard on the backside so you could sit out there to enjoy the Tuscan views (this is also where you can eat breakfast). Our only complaint was that the bed was a little hard, but then you are in Italy and beds are not quite as comfy as American beds. The hotel had all the Italian charm in the décor and finishes. The staff was very polite and helpful. We wish we could have stayed much longer!

We love the Palazzo Ravizza. We had one of the loft rooms at the top, with a window that looked across the rooftops. The rooms were clean, warm, the bed comfortable, the breakfast elegant, even if it wasn't warm enough to use the beautiful greenhouse breakfast room. The library, lounge and bookstore are great. The location is excellent, far enough away from the Campo to be quiet, close enough to walk to everything. The off season rates were excellent. Parking was free in the rear parcheggio. The building is Renaisance, a real palazzo. Don't be fooled by the "pensione" sign.
