“Elegant Hotel inside the city wall”
Reviewed December 29, 2008

This is a sophisticated hotel with a superb location inside the city walls. Once your car is parked, you can walk to everything. We stayed in a duplex suite with a large sitting room, spacious bedroom and 1 and half baths. We loved the suite, but it is suited for those in good physical condition as there is a flight of steps to the bedroom and another flight up to the sitting room. The hike is worth it as the views are really outstanding and the sitting room very luxurious. The bedroom is very spacious with enough closet space for an extended stay. Unfortunately, we only had 2 nights.

This hotel is elegant with an outstanding staff. We had a problem with our car, that the hotel garage discovered. The staff at the hotel helped us change our car at the small Hertz office in Sienna. The hotel staff was quite concerned and did everything they could to help us with this difficult situation. They absolutely saved this part of our trip. We only had a couple of days in Sienna and fortunately did not have to spend our time trying to sort out a problem.

Be sure to have exact directions to the hotel as it is not easy to find. We had directions from both the hotel and directions we found on the internet. It took both sets to find the hotel. There is a very expensive charge to park a car so be prepared. When we arrived within the city walls of Sienna, we understood the charge and the problem of having to park a car quite a distance from the hotel. But again, once your car is parked, you do not need to move it to tour this town.

This is an expensive hotel, but worth the splurge. Do not miss the Palazzo Chigi Saracini. I do extensive research before each trip and I did not find this in my books or other information. We just stumbled onto it and what a find! This is a beautiful palazzo that was converted into a music academy. They do have concerts, but none the days we were there. The tour is excellent, wonderful art and furnishings and an interesting history. You can buy wonderful CD's in their shop. We bought a CD of music that was playing while we were there. We listen to it all the time and remember our lovely time in Sienna.

The Grand Continental was like stepping into the 14th century with 21st century luxury. This 5 star hotel has excellent, friendly service and they speak english perfectly. The location is the best in Siena. The common areas are spectacular because this was a beautiful palace prior to a hotel. Our room was a suite with tall painted ceilings and very luxurious. The only issue we had during our 4 day stay was a hot water problem that was resolved quickly when the new part arrived from Florence. I recommend this hotel to anyone that appreciates 5 star quality and top-notch service. Siena is fantastic. The museums are equal to Florence and Rome and you are centrally located in Tuscany. Food was very good at a number of resturants and the price was equal to California pricing. We did not eat in the Hotel but the breakfast looked great. Siena is an hour train or bus to Florence and closer to various other Tuscany hill towns. From the Continental, it's easy to take a bus to the train station if you don' t have luggage. A taxi cost 10EU from the train station to the Hotel.

Wanted to stay in the heart of the city so we could walk around at night with choices for dinner, drinks & walk out to local cafe for breakfast in the morning, etc. This is only well known luxury hotel in the center of Siena, and though pricey didn't feel it was exorbitant. Gorgeous old palazzo has been updated with modern touches such as hi-tech glass elevator. Our room was medium sized, with really excellent terrace from which we could look out across the red tile rooftops of the town. Overall pleased with choice except: Warning! Did some research before trip to see what type of day trips we'd like to do. For example: Tasting at local wineries, tours to see a cheese factory, or an olive farm to see how olive oil is made, castles, and perhaps an exhibit of falconry. Didn't book any tours because we had a rental car & figured since we're staying at 5 star hotel, hotel can help us with directions, introductions, appointments, etc. Not so. Unless you book a tour through the hotel, they will NOT provide you with ANY information. By tour I mean you pay anywhere from $200-$500 for someone to pick you up and drive you around for the day & take you to wineries, castles, the famous hilltown, etc. Since we wanted to go out touring every day, that would have cost us thousands, not to mention we like to go at a relaxed pace on our own time, and that's why we rent a car. Group tours would have been cheaper, but I'd rather put a fork in my eye than get up at 7:00 a.m. while I'm on vacation and ride around on a bus seeing things on a set schedule. When I asked the hotel staff very specific, direct questions such as "can you recommend a winery to visit?" they had literally no response. Also, be aware that if you ask for a restaurant recommendation, they will direct you to some excellent places. (OMG, the pheasant at the place around the corner! Ask for the place where there are photos of celebrities on the wall). However, one afternoon we found a cute little place that looked causal and charming, but was closed for lunch. When we asked at the hotel desk about going there for dinner, they acted disdainful. I had to be very insistent that they call to make a reservation for us. Obviously that place was not on their preferred list, but it was wonderful. Dinner there cost about half of what dinner cost us at the hotel-recommended restaurants. Also, if you drive to Siena, you will not get your car to the hotel. We drove through the narrow, one-way medieval streets as close as we could to the hotel based on directions we looked up, then parked and walked the rest of the way. One of the bellmen then walked back to the car with us, and drove us up to the hotel to unload our bags, then parked the car nearby. Overall, Siena makes an awesome base for Tuscany. We went to Montalcino, Monteriggiano, San Geminano, Pienza, etc. And, Siena is one of the prettiest cities I've ever seen, so it was more than a pleasure to spend evenings wandering around, having a drink, window shopping, etc. I do recommend this hotel, but make sure you know where you're going and what you're doing before you get there. One thing I'd do next time is I would book a walking tour of the town with an English speaking guide, because even though we read extensively about Siena and the Palio, it would have been nice to stroll the neighborhoods and learn more details. Sorry to pontificate, but a must read prior to a visit is "Too Much Tuscan Sun," by an Italian who has guided many foreign tourists around Siena and Tuscany. It is very humorous, but will also give you great ideas about what to see in the area.

Booked the hotel at luxurylink.com for 2 special packages of 3 nights each, including breakfast, taxes, service and 2 three course dinners with wine and coffee.Arrived 3 p.m.by car.No problems in finding the hotel right in the center of Siena. The recepcionist showed us 2 rooms,a deluxe one and a junior suite(143).We had an upgrade and preferred the suite.High ceilings with very nice affrescos, very spacious, silent,as it faces the back.
Excelent restaurant and the 2 three course dinners were very good, and you can choose from the normal menu not from a different one!
Breakfast is normal.
What is extorsive is the price of the vallet parking 45 euros per day!
The concierge Nabil is very nice and attentive, and organized a birthday dinner, with flowers, cake and the rest very efficiently.
Don't even think in stay at another hotel.

This was our second stay at the GHC. Our family of 4, my wife and I and our 2 kids 10 and 13, booked 2 standard rooms...we were a bit disapointed since last stay we ended up being upgraded to a top floor room with a roof terrace overlooking Siena and the Tuscan hillside....what were the chances of being upgraded again....WE DID!!! and for both rooms and they were connecting....didn't even ask....they just did it on their own. I believe there are only 5 of these rooms...if you can get one it will be the highlight of your hotel stays. This hotel is simply summed up in one word....LUXURY. You are staying in the middle of a Tuscan hilltown with the amenities of a 5 star New York City hotel .It has been gorgeously renovated. We were on a 3 week European trip through London, Paris and Italy and this by far was the kids favorite hotel. My kids were overjoyed with the room........they said..."have a nice time we are staying in the room".....after all the running around we put them through this was a great break for them....and very very safe hotel. I have heard reports of noise but I have to tell you, from the roof in the back of the building you hear NOTHING inside the room. This hotel has the best air conditioning of any hotel I have stayed in in Europe. We never ate at the hotel as there is a great espresso bar located a couple blocks away for breakfast and wonderful restaurants in walking dinner for lunch and dinner. The staff was very pleasant and valet parking (while expensive) couldn't be easier....hand them the keys...that simple. Yes, it's a bit confusing getting to the hotel by car, even though it's my second time I got a bit lost (GPS is pretty much useless to try to find the hotel)....but if you go on their site they have very detailed directions...and once I forgot about the GPS and followed them I was there in a heartbeat. Location could not be better....you are in the middle of Siena. I would think of nowhere else to stay in Siena other than the GHC.

  • Liked — The room had an incredable private rooftop terrace with awesome views of Siena and Tucan Hillside

I stayed at Grand Hotel Continental for three days in June with my family. Siena was much cleaner and calmer than Florence (part of Florence felt like Times Square with both local and tourists - albeit with history) and if you want a luxurious hotel in the center of the town, this is your only choice.

We stayed in a delux room on a high floor. The room was spacious by NY standards with very high ceiling, and was comfortable enough for a family of three including a teenager.

The staff members were all friendly and professional.

I had been concerned about the noise mentioned by some reviewers, but this was not a problem at all during our stay. However, there was a parade during the day and due to some acoustics, the sound was so loudly & clearly heard in our room. So, I think you should check if you plan to stay at this hotel on any special holiday when there may be fireworks, parade, etc. at night.

Restaurants the concierge suggested were casual but the quality was very good in one case and decent in another. Breakfast at the hotel was mediocre at best, and you may want to consider looking for a place outside.

Overall, this hotel deserves its 5 star, and I certainly don't mind staying at this hotel again. If you don't have school-age children, May would be probably a better season to visit since it would not be as hot.
