Owner description: The magnificent complex of the Cathedral of Siena, its Duomo, houses a series of some of the most important monuments of the European artistic panorama. With its more than one million visitors every year, the Cathedral without a doubt represents the fulcrum of the entire complex, while other significant elements include the Crypt, the Baptistery and the Museo dell'Opera, all part of the impressive mass formed by the "Duomo Vecchio" (Old Cathedral), and the "Duomo Nuovo" (New Cathedral). Visitors will travel along a memorable itinerary to the discovery of self and the truth of faith through culture and art, the result of more than a millennium of Western history.

“Siena Duomo”

The art alone in this cathedral is worth the visit. The inlaid marble floors, soaring columns and black and white striped motif are just stunning. The art is from Donatello, Bernini, and Michelangelo. Not just another church.

“Don't stop at one”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 11, 2013

I suspect most visitors to Italy will tick off some of the big religious attractions like St Peters and Florence duomo, and maybe run out of time and energy for others. Don't overlook this one - Siena cathedral is very different and worthy of a visit in it's own right. I'd allow a good two hours for the duomo, library, crypt and baptistery and I'd also highly recommend investing in the ipad guided tour. It gave us a really deep appreciation for the art and history - Ghiberti, Michelangelo and other Renaissance masters are represented here. In a building with loads of wow factors, the Library is outstanding. Get up close to the manuscripts and appreciate the vividness the giant pages still retain after hundreds of years. Visitors that do take the time and energy will be rewarded!

“Beyond Beautiful”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 11, 2013

We saw MANY churches in Italy and this cathedral was by far the most stunning. Wow. A must see! Make sure to take the time to go into all of the little side chapels and dont miss the "library" with ancient hymnals displayed. I could have stayed in there for hours....You have to purchase a ticket to enter. Shoulders and knees covered. We did not wait in line and were not rushed once inside.

The best cathedral you will ever visit. Yes, more impressive than the Vatican! We went early to avoid the heat , unfortunately some of the spectacular mosaic flooring was covered up, but there were portions on display. There are ceremonies to bless the Palio participants that look spectacular - I wish we would've planned better to catch them.
