Why the bias? Because I love exploring things with no one around and I stumbled upon this place when it opened and had it all to myself which made it magical. ASIDE from that, I dont know why this place did not even make it in my tourbook. It's awesome. The collection is not something to drool over, but you are literally walking through a 1,000 year old hospital with old art and new art swirled in. The setting is breath taking and is a good side show to all the churches and obvious museums. Visit this place before it gets popular, and if you're lucky enough to visit this place alone, just soak in the awesomeness.

This museum was outstanding! We arrived early and were for the most part, the only people wandering through. Santa Maria della Scala used to be a very old hospital begun 1,000 years ago and which has now been restored and houses some wonderful frescoes and Etruscan relics. This was a pleasant surprise and well worth the visit.

This museum has not enough guidance on where to go/walk. Also very little of the descriptions are in English. Some of the winding rooms were so dark, you couldn't see anything. Two of the rooms included exhibitions about flags and comics where there was no link at all to the building / former hospital at all. Why not describing more about the historic building instead?

This is not your average museum. It is not well curated and lacks information. However it was an amazing experience to just wander around the lower floors and allow oneself to get lost in spooky corridors and old musty chapels, with the odd skull lurking here and there (and the feeling that there may be something else lurking around too - I wouldn't want to be left behind here at night!!) Even though I left the museum without any real enlightenment as to what I had just seen, I enjoyed it immensely. A definite must for any family with morose teenagers in tow: they will love it!

An amazing sense of activity of the hospital, and a wonderful context for the illustrated history of Siena, and a sense of descending into the underworld past ossuary and down little corridors to the wash house on the lowest level.
