loved the people watching. Cafe's ok for happy hour but over priced and food so-so. better off eating where the locals go.

“the very heart of a city with heart”
Reviewed December 2, 2012

the piazza glows with light and the color of the bricks and the buildings. It attracts everyone; people flock to it, even in late fall. It's a meeting place, a people-watching place, a place to rest and soak up the atmosphere or have ice cream. A plaza surrounded by a noble city ringed with important buildings. And it's the site of a twice-yearly historic race that is one of Siena's most important events. Make a note of Siena's neighborhoods and you will start to notice the symbol for each one show up around the city. Walk around it to comprehend what it means to be the heart of this glorious small city.

“Piazza del Campo exceeds expectations”
Reviewed November 28, 2012

What a sweeping and grand space. I could sit for hours watching the people, soaking in the scene and imagining the excitement of the Palio. Next trip I must find more time to spend in Siena!

“Cool Piazza”
Reviewed November 28, 2012

Loved the restaurants surrounding the piazza.

I don't think this is why they made the piazza slope but I loved how it pulled your eye to the center.

Wish I could see the horse races sometime.

“One of the most beautiful Piazza's you will ever see”
Reviewed November 28, 2012

The Piazza del Campo is exquisite - it's unusual scallop shape and slope make it unique - the architectural design of the surrounding buildings is split into Nine segments in deference to Siena's Rule of Nine
The Fonte Gia (Fountain of Joy) fountain is an ancient treasure designed by Jacobo Della Quercia from 1409-1419 ( no instant installation water-feature this!) is enjoyed by children, dogs and pigeons as well as lovers of antique basins and fountains.
The tall Mangia Bell Tower - even although it has been reduced from it's original height is perhaps one of the most beautiful in Tuscany.
Unfortunately for horses, twice a year this elegant square is completely packed with tens of thousands of locals and tourists desperate to catch a glimpse of the 90 seconds of complete madness known as the Palio! For the sake of a bale of silk (The Palio itself) 10 horsemen ride an unknown horse bareback three times round this square - such is the competition that few of them make it to the finish line still aback their mounts and many of them leave the square in ambulances - but it doesn't matter as it is the horse that has been blessed in the Church before the race, applauded if he is "disrespectful" of the Church and fouls it as this is taken as a good omen, and is awarded - on behalf of his Contade (City region) this coveted prize!! Thank goodness steps have been taken in recent years to protect the lives of the Participants and the Spectators of this ancient Tournament but it is still a crazy spectacle!.
The square - with or without galloping horses - is definitely worth a visit!
