This is the principal public space of the historic center of Siena, and is regarded as one of Europe's greatest medieval squares. It is renowned worldwide for its beauty and architecture. Twice a year, this piazza hosts the famous Palio di Siena which is held around the edges of the Piazza.
A few streets away is the cathedral of Siena (Duomo di Siena) which is dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta.
Siena is also famous for its delicate almond cookies, Ricciarelli and also its Panforte. A must if you have a sweet tooth.
