tight turns, cobblestones--who thought this was a great idea? Far better to enjoy the outdoor cafes that ring this area on 2 sides.

Avoid the overpriced cafes, apart from the Palio and have a drink with friends at night time in Piazza watching the moon go up above the Mangia. Don't try to go up the tower, the view is much better form the Frontone and avoid the piazza like the plague before the Palio. Do go on Palio day though at least once

The atmosphere in this square is wonderful. It is so large that even with the crowds it can be enjoyed. We did sit and have a gelato, but it was the most expensive stop for gelato and coffee we had in 10 days in Italy. Nice place to rest your feet and people watch. The entire square is worth taking in as the buildings all around are different and the atmosphere worth savoring. There is a nice pottery shop in one corner of the square that is chock full and had quite a nice variety and the pricing seemed more reasonable then some of the other shops I stopped in.

There are many reviews of the wonderful Piazza del Campo, but this is on the Fountain of Joy (Fonte Gaia) The Piazza was paved in 1349 and the original Fountain was done in 1342. Replaced in 1419, it was the endpoint for the new water conduits. It is adorned by the Madonna surrounded by classic and Christian virtues. It was designed by Jacopo della Quercia, but the originals are actually in the Ospedale di Santa Maria delle Scala. When replaced in 1866, two nude statues were omitted by city fathers as being too pagan and too nude.

The gently sloping and circular shape of this piazza would be a great place for a concert. We spent a few hours here lounging around watching the filming of a Ballywood movie.
