There are many reviews of the wonderful Piazza del Campo, but this is on the Fountain of Joy (Fonte Gaia) The Piazza was paved in 1349 and the original Fountain was done in 1342. Replaced in 1419, it was the endpoint for the new water conduits. It is adorned by the Madonna surrounded by classic and Christian virtues. It was designed by Jacopo della Quercia, but the originals are actually in the Ospedale di Santa Maria delle Scala. When replaced in 1866, two nude statues were omitted by city fathers as being too pagan and too nude.
