Owner description: St. Catherine passed a large part of her life inside the walls of this stupendous Basilica, which was one of the first to be dedicated to St. Dominic. It was begun by the Dominicans in 1226 on the hill of Camporegio which they had received as a gift from the Malavolti family. Most of the actual rectangular nave and the inside roof with its tranverse beams, all in Gothic Cistercian style, go back to this epoch.

San Domenico is a huge barn of a church with a fairly minimalist interior!
Entry is free but there are no guidebooks or leaflets inside only a couple of info phones.
The main attractions are the relics of St. Catherine and the portrait of her painted by Andrea Vanni.
The stained glass is a bit odd and doesn't really add anything to the atmosphere of the church.
You have good views of the Duomo from outside the church.

Such a great, old church. The relic of St. Catherine is a must see and read. Don't forget to light a candle and take some time to worship in the quietness of this church and marvel at it's beauty as well as humility.

A once in a lifetime chance to see the mummified head of Saint Catherine ,the most important woman ever from Siena. So important, she even got a Pope to move the Papacy back to Rome.

We enjoyed the art on the walls and the large, airy body of this basilica. As a service was begun we shortened our stay, but one could easily spend an hour exploring, if one likes to linger over art and religious artifacts. Some great views of the tower and duomo from the yard of San Domenico.

I swear she winked at me! It's a gruesome tradition to cut bits and pieces off of dead bodies and put them on display for veneration and here you have a head and her finger on a socle....along with the implements of mortification. The church itself has all the charm of a barn, undecorated except for a few fragments and a wonderful Madonna in a side altar, think of it as a sorbet....it's a long walk from the Duomo, but you get a great view.
