“A slice of heaven!”

Having read Frances Mayes' book, 'Under the Tuscan Sun' many years ago, I have always dreamt of renting a farmhouse in Tuscany and spending time there. I researched available properties intensively and found this little treasure. 9 of our extended family went to Podere Le Caggia and had one of the best holidays of our lives.

Tucked away in the countryside outside Siena, this agriturismo is a rustic 400 year old farmhouse. The inside amenities are absolutely modern. The main house has three bedrooms and two bathrooms. The smaller building has three bedrooms and two bathrooms. This was perfect for us because the younger ones stayed there. The kitchen is large and we spent a lot of good times there, cooking meals. It is very thoughtfully equipped.

Surrounded by fields on one side and woods on the other, Le Caggia was peaceful and my Tuscan dream come true. We saw deer, porcupine and a fox.

Waking up in the morning and stepping outside to have our breakfast on the rustic table under a tree with autumnal colours was a deeply satisfying pleasure. With crusty homemade bread provided daily by Jacopo and Fabio, cheese and ham and cold cuts and  delicious honey and orange juice- what more could one wish for?

Jacopo was extremely helpful. We were arriving late on Saturday evening so we requested  him to stock up for our breakfast for Sunday since we would not have time to go grocery shopping. He gladly stocked up for us. We would email our queries and he would promptly help us out. He arranged for a wine tasting and tour at a castle in a nearby town and that was one of the highlights of our visit. He and Fabio also cooked us a 4 course lunch and It took us almost three hours to go through the courses! One of the best meals we had in Tuscany, I would strongly recommend that you let them treat you to this indulgence.

One of the lovely little surprises we had was the abundance of walnuts. Probably the right season for them, they were lying on the ground everywhere and the walnut tree in the front yard had an abundance of them. We had fun cracking them and eating the sweet nuts.

Jacopo directed us to a nearby restaurant favoured by the locals- Donato E Donata. Speaking hardly any English, the family who runs it, gave us delicious food. They served us with so much love, it was like eating at a friend's house. When we were stuffed till we couldnt breathe, they gave us a sampler plate of their desserts and I must confess we polished them off! They also produced some amazing dishes for the 3 vegetarians with us.

A car and GPS are absolutely essential for you to stay here and visit nearby towns.

Having travelled widely, my husband believe that our stay in Podere Le Caggia was one of our best holiday stays.

“Our Tuscan Dream Come True”
Reviewed September 30, 2011 for a stay in September 2011

We have just returned home to Florida after two of the most wonderful weeks of our lives. Podere Le Caggia was truly our dream of Tuscany come true.
The property is absolutely beautiful with breathtaking views, peaceful solitude and lovely and very comfortable accommodations. The actual property and amenities are even better and more beautiful than the descriptions offered on the websites.

We were 4 couples travelling on vacation together, and prior to our arrival at Le Caggia we were joking with each other about how we would choose which bedroom each couple would stay in, hoping that each room would be “equitable”. No issues there. Each of the bedrooms had its own unique charm and style. We were all very pleased and very comfortable with each of our accommodations.
The main house is beautiful with a fantastic, fully equipped kitchen and spacious dining and living rooms. We did lots of our own cooking at home and it was pure joy.
There were also very good restaurants nearby as well for those evenings after a day of sightseeing.

My husband was thrilled that there was a fireplace in the main house and on a few chilly evenings we enjoyed dinner by a romantic and illuminating fire.

The location is ideal for day trips all around Tuscany, about 10 miles to Siena and a little over an hour drive to Florence and all the magnificent hilltop towns in between. The winding roads can be a bit challenging at first but after a day or two you’ll be an expert.

Jacopo and Fabio went above and beyond as our hosts. Their help and advice was invaluable. Be sure to take all of their suggestions and recommendations, you will be very happy that you did.

Le Caggia is remote and very beautiful. It is truly Tuscan living at its finest. A car and a GPS are essential for your stay here. We named our GPS “Nina” and she never steered us wrong. Without her we would have been lost, literally, but with her we were independent and navigated like residents (well almost).

We highly recommend Podere Le Caggia to anyone and everyone that wants to experience Tuscany, for us it was even better than we had imagined. Our stay at Podere Le Caggia was truly a dream come true.

“A Beautiful Tuscan Retreat”
Reviewed September 27, 2011 for a stay in September 2011

We rented this property as a group of 4 couples looking for a relaxing getaway exploring the Tuscan hill towns. The property has two seperate buildings with 4 bathrooms and 6 bedrooms. The main house is large with a big open bright kitchen that is fully equipped with everything you need. There is a large dining room with a fireplace and and equally large livingroom. There is a bath downstairs with a shower. Upstairs are three bedrooms and a large bathroom with a tub and shower. There is also a big sitting area upstairs. A seperate building next to the main house contains 3 more bedrooms and two bathrooms. There is another building that contains the laundry room close by. The property is spotless and very well maintained.

There is a beautiful outdoor area to relax and enjoy the views and sunsets along with a large pool with plenty of outdoor seating to relax. The grounds are fantastic. You can walk the trails and explore all you want.

Getting to the house can be tricky. You need a GPS. Expect to drive up dirt roads that are very curvy. It takes a few days to get familiar with the roads but Fabio and Jacopo who manage the property will be there to help you with everything you need. They went above and beyond to make our stay as special as possible and they were always available if we needed them. They gave us directions, helped with restaurants, cooked us a great meal, made us homemade bread, supplied the house with whatever we requested and made suggestions if they thought it would help. For example, some of us planned to drive to Venice for a two night getaway. They pointed out how difficult the drive would be and suggested we take the bullet train. We changed our plans and they purchased the train tickets for us and told us where we could park for free near the train station. They also emailed our passport information to our hotel after we arrived in Venice and realized we left the passports at the house. They are one of the best reasons to stay at this property.

Don't expect to be able to walk to any local small town near the house. You will need to drive everywhere. Miles and time mean little here. The roads are tricky and it takes more time to get places than you might expect. It took us about an hour and 15 minutes to get to Florence and parking can be a difficult. The most famous hill towns are all within an hour and a half or less from the house.

We loved our stay. If you are looking for a farm house out in the country you can't beat this property.

“1 week was not enough!”

From the minute I got out of the car and heard nothing but the sounds of tweeting birds, I knew I had made the right decision.

Le Caggia is a slice of peace and tranquility in the Tuscan countryside only 20 minutes from Siena. Finding it the first time wasn't exactly a piece of cake but nothing a GPS or a decent navigator can't handle. But the trade off is staying in a farmhouse where you cannot see your neighbour, and where deer and foxes come out at dusk. Fabio and Jacopo could not have been more welcoming and helpful and regularly checked in to make sure we were happy and had eveything. Elizabetta (the owner who lives in a part of the house) was very discreet and we barely saw her. We were a group of 5 so we all had our own room which was bliss. Even with a larger group, there's plenty of room to move around and space to find a quiet spot. When we were there it was still too cold for the pool, but the area around the pool was perfect for sitting in the sun having lunch and the table under the tree was ideal for watching the sun sink over the hill. The villa itself has a hairdryer in every bathroom and plenty of towels. We found there was already dishwashing liquid and other basics so it's a good idea to arrive first to check out what is already there before heading to the shops.

The actual layout of the villa is a little unusual. It consists of a main house with 2 double bedrooms and 2 bathrooms (one upstairs and one downstairs). The main house also has the big kitchen, a dining room and a living room. Then there is another building about 10 metres away from the main house which has 3 further bedrooms and 2 bathrooms as well as a little sitting area and kitchen - good for making a cup of tea in the morning if you didn't want to go over to the main house. I couldn't quite get my head around how this would work out but it was fine in the end and actually created more of a sense of spaciousness for us all.

If this will be your first stop from Rome, I would recommend catching the train to Siena and then picking up a hire car from there. There are a couple of companies that have offices just near the train station, and from there, finding your way to Le Caggia is relatively simple. Well, easier than from Chiusi where we picked up our car.

Day trips from Le Caggia are plenitful but you'll find yourself wanting to spend time around the villa too, hence my friends and I all deciding we should definitely have chosen to stay for 2 weeks instead of one - next time!

The pictures do not reflect the updates that have been made on this property. It is even better! The location is remote and tricky to get to, but it is perfect to get to villages by car in the Tuscany region. We drive to Florence in less than 90 mins. It's very close to a supermarket. Siena is a short trip and great for shopping and restaurants. Jacopo and Fabio could not have been more helpful and friendly. We had them prepare a meal for us which was wonderful, one of the best we had that week, certainly the most food we had at one meal! They prepared our meal in a hidden kitchen off the kitchen in our house which was a surprise to us! The beds were comfortable and amenities were typical for Italy. Take your own soaps and tissues, pump hand soaps were at every sink! Kitchen was nicely equipped for cooking, great selection of house wines for 5 Euros each! We loved the location and houses, but wish that the wireless internet connection was better for access to US news which was important. A router access point in each house would probably resolve that problem. Service was above and beyond expectations!
