“Best of our trip”
Reviewed November 25, 2013

This was by far the best meal of our trip. While much of the food, especially breads, had seemed to decline from the last time I was in Italy 20 years ago, this restaurant didn't disappoint. The eggplant appetizer was to die for and the ghocchi with gorgonzola were superb. Very small and out-of-the-way location added to the charm. I recommend 100%!

“Perfect for lunch”
Reviewed September 7, 2013 via mobile

We had a very good lunch at this small and comfy location in a side street. The staff was very intend and quick. The food was also above standard. Definitely worth a try!

“Restaurant in decay”
Reviewed August 29, 2013 via mobile

For several years now we give Siena a visit; we then also like(d) to have our lunch at il Sasso.
A few years ago the food, service and 'living room' atmosphere were very good, unfortunately, this time we found the food just tagging off average (pizza not baked well, soggy bottom), the service inpersonal. The seating was still the same, cosy.

“Magical Setting, OK Food”
Reviewed July 19, 2013

Siena's beauty is so uplifting that it is hard to be unhappy there---even when food is just so-so and the service is slow. Il Sasso is tucked away from the worst tourist crowds, yet a seat outside can provide endless fascination. The people-watching here is great (lots of well tailored businessmen with gelato at lunchtime!), while the Renaissance architecture and cobbled streets are transporting. I had the seafood salad, which was very good, if heavy on the squid (and light on the more expensive shrimp & mussels). My friend had the shrimp au gratin, which was overdone (hard to peel) but tasty. One needn't spend a lot of money here, and I saw plenty of pizzas delivered to neighboring tables. Still, the "best looking" dishes by far were those with seafood.

“Excellent service and good food”
Reviewed July 9, 2013

We found this restuarant on a small side street just off of the main pedestrian corridor in the old part of Siena. The weather was nice so we opted to sit outside and people watch as we enjoyed our dinner. The service was excellent and very attentive without hovering. We had pasta and a seafood platter. The local Pici style pasta was excellent and the seafood platter was very good, but a little hard to eat (lots of cracking shells, etc.). With a glass of chianti it made for a very nice evening. We did not have pizza, but the pizza at the next table looked very good. I think I will try the pizza next time - if I make it back to Siena.
