This villa was heavenly! The house, really a chapel and a little house converted into 8 bedrooms (they property lists 7 but there were actually 8!), was even better than I expected. The rooms were comfortable, the living areas very large, the linens plush, and the kitchens fully stocked with cooking needs.
Everything looked exactly like the pictures - only better. Pictures cannot capture the feel of the place... how lovely it was to sip morning coffee in the courtyard overlooking the green valley, how delightful it was to to pick ripe figs from the ancient tree, how lush it was to breathe in the scent of the the huge rosemary and laurel bushes, how relaxing it was to catch a nap under the canopy by the pool, how cozy it was to have dinner and conversation til late in the night with the stars so close.
The house was wonderful, but even more so, because we were a party of 12, family and friends from Europe and America meeting up for a week. The property was the perfect backdrop for this reunion.
The house is stocked with plenty of dishes, pots and pans, kitchen utensils (except for a wine opener), two American size refrigerators, lots and lots of glasses, many big serving bowls and platters, good quality linens, pool towels, books, puzzles, TVs, wifi, plenty of parking (we had 4 cars!), There was a welcome basket of foods and olive oil (made from property olives!)
The property is a challenge to find , GPS was useless, and directions given to us were tough to follow. But aside from each new arrival grumbling about the hunt for the property, no one had any complaints. All week long we kept saying to each other "isn't this place amazing!"
I would be remiss in not mentioning Jesus, the caretaker. What a treasure he is. Efficient, charming, accommodating- he was so wonderful to help us. He only speaks Spanish and Italian, and fortunately some of us could talk to him. Which was a good thing, he told us about the history of the property. He is also the maker of the olive oil!
Siena is really only 15 minutes away - down the mountain where the house is, and up the next mountain to old town Siena. Stores and the train station are easy drives. The closest hamlet has a very good restaurant, but not much else.
The biggest problem was having to leave this property. I travel quite a bit and this was without a doubt the best vacation I have ever had due in a good part to how contented we all were in Villa del Cielo with Caminetto.
