“Hearty food with a homemade feel”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 1, 2013 via mobile

We ate lunch here on a cool December day. The seating is in a tent outside, so it was a bit cold (several space heaters keep it bearable). The service was quick and friendly. The food is very down-to-earth and hearty. The ribollita was delish as was the veal with mushrooms and pheasant. Probably not a place for vegetarians.

“acceptable food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 26, 2012

This family-run restaurant located in the old market square of Siena is a local classic, so I was looking forward to eating there; the surprise is that I'd never done so in all these years living in Siena!

Service was prompt if terse and not warm. Table wine was good value for its price and served in the bottle; you then pay what you drink only. My starter of mixed local hams was tasty, as was my husband's past with boar-meat sauce. Our 2nd course, a boar-meat stew, was particularly tasty, and I recommend it during hunting season (it's not a spring or summer dish).

Overall, a pleasant experience and I will go back gladly, although not necessarily every week; this place is on the average for a good, family-run, Tuscan trattoria.

“made the wrong choices?”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 6, 2012

This restaurant had been recommended not just by TripAdvisor, but by Rick Steves, Frommer's, Fodor's, and the housekeeper at our agriturismo! All around us, Italian men were eating huge platefuls of beef. Oddly, I was the only female in that part of the restaurant, besides the waitress. We ordered pasta with oil and peppers, petti di pollo, a contorni (spinach), and tagliarini with "duck sauce". The mushy spinach contained several foot-long blades of grass; the chicken breast was charred and inedibly dry; the "spicy" pasta had no flavor at all, and the "duck sauce" turned out to be chunks of duck liver that tasted terrible. Probably the worst food, all in all, that we had during our trip. And the server appeared to be having a bad night as well. She was grouchy and abrupt to everyone.

“Great Tuscan cuisine”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 30, 2012

Recommended by many Siena citizens when we asked for the best authentic restaurant in Siena. Great food, beautiful and worm ambiance. Didn't even tried to understand the menu, just asked for the waiters recommendations and they were great. Simply lovely!

“Comfort food in Siena”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 26, 2012

We spent a week in Siena and tried Papei on the basis of our hotel's recommendation. We ended up eating there three times -- excellent food, good service and amazing value. We had numerous dishes and liked everything. Wine was also very good.
