Fattoria Abbazia Monte Oliveto
Reviewed September 6, 2013

We stayed here for a week in July. The location is superb: you can easily walk into San Gim to enjoy the inimitable medieval atmosphere and dine al fresco in spots like The Old City Wall with breathtaking views. The Fattoria itself is clean, sympathetically refurbished and has an amazing pool surrounded by lavender plants.. The rooms are spacious, quiet and well equipped for self-catering.
Heartily recommended.

This is a charming little place with a pool and views to die for. San Gimginano is a nice hilltop town, if slightly ruined by tourists. The big bonus of this place is it is a fairly easy (15 min) walk in to town while most places of a similar standard are further away. Only gripes are the mosquitoes (can't do much about that) and fairly basic rooms.

We spent the first week in August in the ground floor self-catering apartment - L'oliveta. It was the first time we have had a holiday of this kind - having always camped previously. The apartment was well-equipped and furnished in a simple style. It was spotlessly clean. The weather was very hot when we were there - 38 degrees most days. The one air-conditioning unit in the lounge/kitchen was also quite ineffective (never got below 27 degrees the whole time we were there). There were 2 fans for the 3 bedrooms, so we spent some sleepless nights because of the heat. Although the property had been refurbished well, all of the windows in this apartment are above head-height and so it did feel that we were missing out on the fantastic views. However, the pool is wonderful and even with all 7 apartments occupied - did not feel crowded as different people came and went at different times of the day. We thought that the provision of some table-tennis tables and maybe badminton nets would have kept our teenage lads occupied. The lady who works there is lovely and nothing was too much trouble. As others have said, it is less than 1KM to San Gimignano and we thought was a fairly easy walk to all the restaurants, Co-op supermarket etc. The ice cream is to die for, especially the After Eight flavour from the gelataria in the main square of the town. It has given us a real taste for Italy and a self-catering holiday of this type - we will definitely be leaving the tent at home again.

Room Tip: If I went again I would choose an apartment on the first or second floors.

We stayed in the second floor apartement - Massino. It was basic but clean with wonderful views of the town and countryside. We loved the fact that I could run to the bakers in the morning and walk to town (even in the heat) in the evenings. The pool was great and the wine tasting good value. Facilities were basic but then we did not spend that long inside the apartment. Would certainly recommend.

Room Tip: Our apartment on the secound floor had no formal outside space but we managed to 'borrow' a...

This place is beautifully renovated and the standard is high. Well-equipped and spacious apartments We stayed in one of the large ground floor apartments - L'Oliveta - with table and chairs just outside on the lawn which is kept nice and green. The pool area is just awesome with a fantastic view of the wine- and olivefields and the nearby monastery. You must participate in their wine-tasting evening with great Tuscan antipasti and of course the wine they produce. Specifically we recommend their Vino Santo - a very nice and tasty dessert wine. There is only a 15-minutes walk to the beautiful old town of San Gamignano with nice restaurants - and Gelatarias! Just one negative thing to mention: the A/C is not very helpful and they only provided fans in two of the three bedrooms - and when we finally got one extra, one of the others broke down ... But this could not spoil our overall very positive impression of this place.

We stayed here for a week as part of our honeymoon trip to Italy. the place is so beautiful! We stayed in the Fusaia apartment on the first floor. It had a beautiful view over the Tuscan countryside, this was facing in the direction of the pool, not towards San Gimignano. The apartment was lovely & clean. There was no hairdryer or iron which I thought was a small bit odd but I didn't ask for these...maybe they'd have been available if requested!
The pool area is so gorgeous and we had it to ourselves a lot of the time. We had a rental car so went on some day trip to Sienna & Lucca and then wandered into San Gimignano for our dinners in the evening. It's 10 minute walk & mostly uphill but it's very do-able. Definitely recommend this place, it has that real Tuscan countryside feel...while still being right outside San Gimignano where there's loads to see & gorgeous restaurants!
