Castello di Fulignano
Reviewed May 25, 2009

We have just returned from 3 days staying at Castello di Fulignano and had such a wonderful stay. We are a group ranging from 1 year to 70 years and none of us wanted to leave, hence changing out 2-day weekend away to 3 days! Although Francesco did not speak English, he was the most welcoming and friendly host you could hope for and also makes amazing dinners! There was also a lady who lives across the road and speaks English who came to check on us numerous times to check that we had everything we needed, to book taxis etc. The views are to die for, almost 360 degrees of rolling hills and the towers of San Gim. THe pool is beautiful and huge and looks out onto the beautiful views. Really for us, the hosts made it such a special trip.
Oh yeah, it is self-catering so you need to pretty much bring everything ie. dishwashing detergent, toilet paper if you are staying more than a day or two. We didn't realise this as we booked at the last minute and had no food for lunch when we arrived, so Francesco brought us up a plate of salami and prosciutto and crusty bread which was delicious. Hope that helps anyone looking for a lovely place to stay.

It is indeed a beautiful place. We enjoyed the view of San Gimignano tower from our bedroom window. However, the road leading to the Castello is winding, narrow and unpaved, so if you don't want to venture out late in the day to avoid night time driving. Francesco is very friendly, but does not speak or understand any English. The buzzer on the gates doesn't work, so we had to call him on the cell phone and explain, that we arrived, so, -please let us in.. He showed up a few minutes later. The apartment was very clean. But the small things which make you feel welcome are absent: no bath supplies (only 2 tiny soaps), no salt or pepper in the kitchen. Staff is not available in the evening - should something happen we'd not know whom to call. It would be nice if the owners would provide guests with information on the nearby grocery stores and recommendations for the local restaurants. I don't recommend to order breakfast on the property: you don't get much for the $18 euro.
In general, if you don't mind the inconveniences mentioned above, the scenery is gorgeous, and the place itself is well manicured and clean. But I'll not recommend it to my friends.

This wonderful farmhouse in Tuscany, near Poggiobonsi, was a terrific base for exploring Tuscany -- we stayed five nights, cooked at home each night with local ingredients, were able to explore Florence, Siena, Piza, and the hill towns of the region, while coming home each night to an elegant and romantic base. Fabulous -- I will stay there again!

We just spent 1 week at the Castello di Fulignano and were delighted by our stay. It is our second visit to the Castello as we already spent 2 weeks in August last year.
The location of the Castello is absolutely marvelous; alone on a hill overlooking the village of San Gimignano. It's also a very quite place as the only roads going there is not tarred.
The appartments are really nice, big, clean and well furnished (AC, Sat TV, etc.). Bathrooms are also very nice and large.
The pool of the Castello is absolutely terrific with an incredible view of the San Gimignano and the surroundind area.
We will definitely return to the Castello very soon. It has become my daughters favorite holyday place!!!
Prices are not low but compare to other accomodation in the same area, the Castello seeems to be quite cheap!
