“the best place!!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 18, 2007

We loved this B&B and it wasn’t because it was only in Tuscany. This B&B is a farm and everything they serve you comes from their farm. The owner Carla was such a sweet women, she spoke very little English but enough to communicate with you. We stayed in the family suite and it was perfect for our party of four. Like another reviewer said, the beds are firm but fine. We had a suite off of the dining room but you could not really hear any noise from there. We had two bedrooms a large bathroom with a separate tub and a sitting area with a couch. Both rooms had a TV but you only got Italian shows. The rooms were nice size and you had plenty of space. There wasn’t any A/C but you really didn’t need it because once you opened your windows the fresh breeze would come in and cool the rooms down. The towels were changed every-other-day but you had daily maid service. The B&B has a pool that was very nice plus a lot of ground space that you can walk around and see the beauty of the Tuscan hills. We missed the tour that is offered because it is done only on a scheduled day. The breakfast and the dinners were the best. For breakfast you got fresh cheese and sliced meats, freshly made bread, homemade jellies and jams and some sort of breakfast quiche. You also had fresh fruits from their orchard, cereals and some type of sweet. If you wanted eggs, they made them to order. She made fresh coffee of your choice from Americano to cappuccinos all done up fresh each morning. Carla’s mother cooked all your meals and dinner was something you didn’t want to miss. Be aware that they don't serve dinners on Sundays. We had everything from rabbit to mini pizzas made in their outdoor ovens. The desserts were to die for especially the tiramisu. For the price that she charged you for dinner you couldn’t eat anywhere in Tuscany for the price and for the amount that you got. When we didn't eat at the B&B we found the restaurant, La Vecchia del Mura. Also try and get a table outside in the courtyard across the street…..the view is breathtaking! Their rabbit here is the best we had ever eaten and their pasta dishes are top notch.

We talked extensively with a representative, Tiziana, before booking our stay. What we were told and what we got were completely different.
1) We were told a taxi ride from the closest train station would cost 15 euros. In fact, it cost 50 euros.
2) We were told we would get a tour of their olive oil factory and also their winery. We did not. The explanation for this was that everyone else was staying a week and we were only there two days, and they had planned the "tour" on another day.
3) We were told that excursions into "nearby" towns were easy to arrange. San Gimignano is actually a 30 minute drive from the farm! They said the farm could help the guests get into town.. In the e-mail, they said transportation would not be a problem... but when we got there, they told us that all of their guests rent cars, as that is the easiest way to get around Tuscany. We arrived on a Sunday and there was no place to rent a car from. Further, it would cost 30 euros just to get to a rental place! To help compensate for this, however, after a lot of reluctance and making it clear that they were being "put out" by us, Carla offered to let us ride with her to Volterra. They called taxi companies for us to get a ride back into town. At this point, Carla spoke on the phone and made every taxi driver aware that we were "Americano" before asking for the price. The lowest price was 50 euros (close to $100) and we explained that we had not budgeted for that. After about 30 minutes, lots of eye-rolling and sighs, Maurizo offered to give us a ride to the bus station in San Gimignano, where we could catch an inexpensive bus back to the train station.
3) The beds felt like plywood.
4) We were told that a light lunch would be prepared for us upon arrival. We arrived on Sunday and were told that they don't work on Sunday. After some complaining about the cost of a taxi to get back into town, they served us some cold cuts (as originally promised). Upon check out, they tried to charge us 8 euros each for the lunch.
5) We were told that we would have a Tuscan Cooking class if enough people signed up - for the cost of 25 euros per person. Recognizing how disappointed we were with our accommodations, they arranged for us to help cook the 20 euro per person meal that we were paying for. This meant that we kneaded pasta dough, cut it, put it on a pan to dry, and formed foccacia dough. Literally, this was all we did. There was no class. We just basically helped. No recipe. No instruction. Upon check-out, they charged us 15 euros each make-shift "cooking class" - helping them knead the dough.
6) We were not shown around the farm - where things were, how to get wine or drinks or food. The family did not help us to feel at home at all. We definitely felt that we were in the way and an inconvenience.
7) Although we had brought a copy of the e-mails with us to the farm and showed them in black and white what we were promised, they never once apologized for the misrepresentation.
