“Nice spot in Tuscany”
Reviewed September 19, 2013

We arrived in pouring rain and Flavio welcomed us in with a glass of local wine. It was very cosy and homely. Flavio cooked up a storm and managed to feed 10 people despite the fact that we arrived not long beforehand! We shared along with the other guests a great (reasonably priced too) 4 course meal with accompanying wines in a very friendly atmosphere, enjoying the new company. Our room was quite spacious and pleasant, the shower a little too small but the same as elsewhere in Italy :) Breakfast was much better than the average Italian one. We really enjoyed our stay.

First place to stay outside of the major cities. What a time!

Located 4km north of San Gimignano, Il Vicario was a welcome break from the hustle and bustle of the city. Arrived via bus from Poggibonsi to town.

Getting there can be tricky, but doable if you don't have car. Taxis are available, but they don't say "Taxi' and there is no set schedule. We called Claudio Gamberucci at 39 335/6187312 (cell) and he took us back and forth between the San Gimignano and Il Vicario a few times for 15 Euro each. The TI booth will give you a list of taxis in town. Another better option would be to rent a Vespa after you drop off luggage at Bellini Bruno. 60 Euro a day for a real 125cc Vespa. FUN!!

Back to Il Vicario. We stayed in the apartment above the kitchen. See pics, but huge and comfortable. Very quiet and clean with beautiful views. You can tell time was taken in putting it together. No AC, but there was a fan and it was only hot (to me) during the day and early evening. Mosquitos can be an issue so buy some repellent if you can't handle that (I hate mosquitos). Shower was wonderful, plenty of hot water, etc.

Fulvio, the owner, is a charismatic, caring man who provides helpful advice about daily itineraries and is a wonderful cook. We ate there both evenings we stayed for 25 Euro person/meal. It was well worth it and without a doubt was better than any restaurant would be. See pics. Local wines from San Donato winery were offered with each course. His sister and niece help out there and friendliness must run in the family. :)

The cooking class during our stay was full, but it looked like it was a wonderful time. Lots of singing, wine, and chatting. Seemed to last more than 4 hours.

Fulvio recommended we travel by Vespa to Volterra and visit San Donato winery on the way home. This was a great trip in the countryside and should be done if you have the chance.

We will return to Tuscany again and plan to stay here again. Many good wishes to Fulvio from "the big strong man (me)" and "the boss (my wife)"

Highly recommended!!!!!

If you are looking for a warm welcome, helpful advice on what to see, great home cooked meals and a lovely atmosphere in a rustic old home stay here. This is not a 5 star hotel this is a 13th century Tuscan priests house so the rooms are old, there's no tv and the bathrooms are cramped. .but it's wonderful because of that..full of charm and character . We made great new friends over long dinners sitting outside in the warm evening, had long chats about places to visit with Fulvio ( the owner) who does a great job of looking after everyone, relaxed by the pool, had some great drives around the local area. Great holiday.

Katia and her uncle Fulvio run the Tuscan cooking class in their B&B Il Vicario which is about 4 km from San Gimignano and they teach you how to prepare a real Tuscan meal. They are such sweet and accomodating people and also very prompt with their replies and communication.

Il Vicario is a quaint little hotel outside of San Giminiano. The people running it are very pleasant and charming. The meal we had in the evening was sensational and we were provided with an education about Tuscan food and wine. Barely made it back to the room after sampling all of the wines in the region. You can also book in for cooking lessons.

Il Vicario is fairly isolated. We didn't have a car and probably anyone who is planning a visit there should drive. From the town of San Gimignano we had trouble getting a taxi. Our Vodaphone connection was out of range. Eventually a person we found in a bar helped us call a cab. This took several hours and we were standing at the bus stop right outside the gates of San Gimignano town! The taxi cost 10 Euros to the hotel and 15 Euros back to the bus stop. Taxi pricing in Italy appear to be a fairly arbitrary affair. Without a car there is not much to do apart from lie around the pool and eat great food. The hotel also has free wifi (very handy) and the rooms are comfortable. There are no clothes washing facilities. We eventually found a laundromat in Poggibonsi many kilometres away.

It was however a memorable stay and we regret not booking more days there. A very pleasant and relaxing experience.

Room Tip: We found the stairs a bit tricky as the light switch turns itself off leaving the upper levels in co...

Ciao Gary,

thank you for your kind review. I'm very happy to know you had nice time with us and the next time you'll came we could organize a special cooking lesson for you, so you'll discover all our cooking secret.
We are 4 km far from the town and car is necessary, but if you would like came here and not drive, let us know in advance, we can arrange taxi for all your tour and to take you from train or bus station, and maybe for a better price!
Warm regards
Fulvio

Hard to know where to begin. May with getting out of our car and being hit with the aroma of flowers. Some type of lilac I think, but better. Fulvio was the best! Fun, informative, so helpful, accommodating.... We didn't have a GPS or a working phone and finding this gem is not easy, (but totally worth it) One phone call and he came and showed us the way. Katia is a doll! So sweet and kind! And man can she cook! The food and wine was amazing! Fresh ingredients from the garden! Each day when we returned from sightseeing we felt like we were coming home to family. My husband and I traveling with our 3 teenagers and my parents and everyone felt comfortable. While we didn't have time to take a class we came back to find one in progress looked like so much fun! The rooms were comfortable and clean. WiFi is available for those who want to check email or post pictures, my kids were thrilled! This is a 13th century farm house and Fulvio can tell you the history of the house. Really a fantastic Tuscan experience. If you want to really be immersed in Tuscan culture and food, stay here!! Remember to have dinner there. It is a wonderful dining experience with wine and a great value!

Room Tip: Our Kids were in room 5 which was a big enough to accommodate all of them comfortably we were right...

My wife and I joined two of our friends for an advanced cooking class taught by Katia with assistance from Fulvio. It was our favorite activity while in Tuscany! We were met by Fulvio with cappucino as we arrived a bit early. We were very excited to feel like we were in a Tuscan home as opposed to being taught in a commercial kitchen.

Katia was wonderful! She seemed well traveled, understanding and having been to many parts of the USA. This helped as we discussed how we would transfer the knowledge back to our own country where sometimes the same fresh vegetables and ingredients would not be available. She had my attention immediately when she asked 'can you all follow recipes?' and then followed up with 'well there are no recipes or measurements here!' That is how I wanted to learn, a pinch here, a dash there, a glug there, a bigger pinch here, etc. Of course there were some basic 'steps' (recipes) to follow, but it truly was a local learning experience.

She took us from learning to make pasta...her favorite Pici made with semola flour, all purpose flour, salt and water. She had a wonderful fun spirited personality that wasn't afraid to toss a noodle back at me and tell me I could do better when my Pici wasn't rolled very well.

We made two types of pasta, Pantanella (Toscan Bread Salad), Bruschetta, gnocchi, 3 sauces (2 red and one cannelinni), chicken saltenbucca and tiramasu. We spent over four hours alternating between cooking and eating what we had prepared. We also met a couple from France who were staying at the B&B who further enhanced the entire experience.

When we returned to our villa we found ourselves preparing the meals again for the other couples on our trip. Immediately upon returning home to Duluth my wife and I prepared the chicken saltenbucca with pici and a red sauce. Over the weekend, we made Bruschetta con aglio e olio, gnocchi and Aglione as a sauce, followed up with tiramasu for dessert for 12 of our close friends.

My point is we left the class immediately able to put what we learned to practical use. This was truly an amazing experience and we would recommend it to anyone who loves to cook!

Thank you Katia and Fulvio!
