“Authentic place in the heart of San Gimignano”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 28, 2011

Stayed here for one night in the winter. There weren't a lot of open places, and we were lucky that we walked up to this place just when the proprietor was walking up. There was a definite language barrier, but we were able to communicate well enough, and were provided with a nice sized room. The room felt like you were staying in a guest room at somebody's home, both in good ways or bad ways. By that I mean that the room is decorated like a guest room, not a hotel room. It had a large, though only somewhat comfortable bed. The bathroom was only somewhat clean looking, but had a surprisingly comfortable shower. There aren't modern amenities like internet, though I think there may have been an old TV. There was a balcony of some sort attached to the room, but since it was winter and dark, we didn't use it.

The breakfast part of the bed and breakfast was fairly week. It mostly consisted of shrink wrapped pastries. Unfortunately the woman serving the breakfast spoke even less English than the first woman we'd met, so we weren't able to talk to her, which would have been nice.

Perhaps the best thing about the b&b is it's location in the heart of San Gimignano. In fact, that makes the whole experience much more charming. When you're in the middle of a old town, staying in an authentic b&b run by older women seems much more charming than if you were doing the same thing in a large city.

We have stayed 2 nights in this hotel which is in the main street of San Gimignano. Rooms are clean and you can live the old histrocial town from your window. If you really want to live in the centre of San Gimignano it's ok for 2-3 night stays. But you can also find hotels with swimming pools and nature view which are only 5 minutes away from the centre.

Beautiful clean rooms in a great location. It is in the main street not far from the entrance to the old town- but it is very quiet. Giovanna is lovely- I had a very nice stay for just one night- unfortunately!

A lovely place to stay with a homely atmosphere. The owner is charming, breakfast is filling, the only down side is not in the accommodation but the town. It is beautiful town but the cost of restaurants is over the top.

We really wanted to like the Casa di Giovanna. The location was good - just inside of the main entrance to the city center, on the lovely main streets with lots of shops, cafes, gelaterias, restaurants etc. nearby - and our hosts were nice. The room was large, a good size for a family, and right on a small terrace, which was a pleasant place to sit in the evening. If you like meat and cheese for breakfast, theirs is sufficient, and if you are looking for a less expensive option in San Gimignano, it certainly is affordable in comparison to the other options in town in the summer (I believe some of the slight more upscale places are less expensive in the rest of the year).

On the minus side, our room had one of the worst showers in history (think garden hose with your thumb over it), a very, very old and sagging bed, no air or fan of any kind (and believe me, in July, it was really stifling...and you can't open the windows because the planted terrace was mosquito heaven...I really must stress that the room was like an oven...we are not big on air conditioning typically, but we were absolutely sweltering at night here), and the breakfast was in no way to our liking (the orange juice was more orange colored water than juice, and the yogurt was so artificially sweet, it tasted like candy...again, if you are a meat and cheese person for breakfast, you should be fine, but

If you are wondering whether the hotel has internet access, it doesn't. There are few options in town for internet - a couple of cafes that are open until about 7:30 on the other side of town. If internet is a priority for you, you should probably look elsewhere.we are not).

Also, this is not the hotel's fault, but there is some crazy neighbor who listens to the tv at blaringly loud levels from 6 am...he/she also plays with the volume incessantly (somewhat like a warring couple over the remote), and the tv was on late into the evening, so if you are a light sleeper, bring your earplugs.

Overall, if you are on a budget, you may find this to be a good option, but I think you will find in the end that you got what you paid for, and certainly not anything more.

Yes, it is hard to find the "door", but it is worth the hunt. Great location in this town. Our room looked out onto the "main" street in the old town. And yes, it was very noisy in the morning with the deliveries to the shops all around us, but since we needed to get up to shower/eat and get to the bus, it was no big deal.Room was lovely. Huge, very high ceilings, clean, & bed was very comfortable. Breakfast was nice. Lots of freshly made coffee for me and juice for my daughter. Fruit, meat, cheese and breakfast pastries, very typical italian breakfast. My daugther and I felt like we were princesses in our own private castle.Ask about the history of the building, the owner may not speak english, but she will go next door to ask for the man to come and translate info that you made need for the bus stop or anything else. A steal for the price. Try to get away from the "touristy" part of the city and walk out to the real city and you will find many hidden treasures around and down each street. Especially the ancient ruin fountains outside the old cities walls, well worth the hike!!!
