“Rural Tuscan idyll”
Reviewed July 29, 2012

We found Fortezza de' Cortesi on Alastair Sawdays website and were thrilled with our choice. Cledy and her husband were very welcoming and we felt extremely lucky to have found this idylic spot nestled in the countryside.

The Tuscan countryside surrounding the property is stunning and provides numerous photo opportunities! The building itself is over 1000 years old and visually impressive with simple but in keeping rooms. The gardens are beautiful with masses of rosemary and a pool surrounded by lavender with spectacular views.

San Ginignano is a 15 minute drive away and Cledi will happily order you a taxi if you don't fancy the drive which is a little off the beaten track and narrow roads in San Ginignano.

We spent three comfortable nights in this hill-top villa in Tuscany. The view over the olive groves and vineyards towards San Gimignano is breath-taking. We were there during a hot spell and particularly appreciated resting in our large comfortable room with its efficientair conditioning after the heat and crowds in the towns. The house is tastefully decorated and very comfortable, and the breakfast, with local produce, delicious. We enjoyed the warm welcome of our hosts, and recommend Fortezza de Cortesi as a restful base for visiting the region.

Very relaxing and welcoming. Very generous breakfasts. A good base for the SIenna area. We also like the pool. Their restaurant in San Gimingano was excellent.

Room Tip: We were in Preziosa which was lovely.

Dear Mr Speculand,
thank you to appreciate our dwelling and to consider it a strategic place to return to “chill out” in total relaxation after a day out visiting the most enchanting sites of Tuscan art and culture, whether Siena, Florence, Volterra, Pisa, Lucca or Montalcino.
The site in the middle age was also considered a strategic place, too!
Grazie e cari saluti anche alla sua gentile moglie.

We stayed at Fortezza de' Cortesi for five nights during our honeymoon. We were looking for somewhere quiet with beautiful countryside and a few activities available locally - we found it! The main house is a lovely old building with lots of character, the pool the ultimate place to relax while enjoying the scenery, and the garden a great place to enjoy a bottle of local wine while watching the sunset. We especially enjoyed the wonderful breakfasts. We would also recommend their lovely resaturant Dulcis in Fundo - Roberto made us very welcome! A simple rustic place to stay but perfect if you want to relax in peace and quiet!

Room Tip: We had the Smerelda room, which had a lovely view of San imignano in the distance.

My family and I enjoyed the most relaxing and beautiful experience at this villa near San Gimignano. The accomodations were lovely, comfortable and convenient. The service and hospitality were impeccable. We enjoyed a home made meal made by the owner Cledy and her staff. It was amazing! The best tiramisu I have ever had! The villa is only a 10 minute drive into San Gimignano and what a town! I fell in love with it. We also had the opportunity to eat at the owner's restaurant called Dulcis in Fundo which is one of the best restaurants I have eaten in all of Italy. I hope to one day visit this place again. Thank you Cledy and Roberto!

Dear Mrs Susie, thank you very much indeed for your compliments. You and your family are so kind and friendly and it has been really a pleasure to spend with you so a pleasant night.
If you should come again I'll prepare for you another typical Tuscan menu with our farm products.
What about "home made pasta with our San Gimignano saffron"?
Many, many greetings to your husband Reza, to Mr Dennis, Mrs Peggy and your wonderful son Dante (what a beautiful italian name!). Cledy and Roberto

First, you must be on the mood. It is a rustic romantic place. Everything is very simple, but, as one once said, simplicity is the last degree of elegance. By the price you pay, you must think you are paying to see how paradise looks like, not for a mini bar full of sugar and alcohol. The owners also run a restaurant at San Gimignano... Best restaurant in italy so far. Fortezza's guests get discount. The owners and staff by the way, very warm.
Buy the things you wanna eat and drink before going up hill and your night will be perfect. Be aware you will need a car, but GPS works fine and every place is just 10 - 15 minutes away.
We wouldn't change the stay for nothing!

Fortezza de' Cortesi is a beautiful restored B&B Inn in a working farm near San Gemingnano. The place and owners were very welcoming. The house was comfortable and all that a country inn should be in Tuscany. San Gemingnano, Siena, and Monteriggioni were all easily accessible and a less than one hour train ride put us in the center of Florence. The family restaurant in San Gemingnano (Dulcinfundo) provided the best dinner of a two week vacation. I would happily return again.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Fortezza de 'Cortesi is a place dedicated to very special guests, who want to totally immerse themselves in the pleasure of an experience in the Tuscan countryside without sacrificing the charm and comfort of an exclusive environment. A charming resort between Florence and Siena in San Gimignano country, that has been awarded the "agriturismo" Tuscany top classification of three wheat sheaves. Standing on top of a hill, with a surrounding view of the spectacular Tuscan countryside and Chianti hills, it overlooks the famous towers of San Gimignano, only 5 kilometres away. This is where history, art and culture join together with the beauty of colours and rhythm of nature. A good retreat but also a site that tells us a story full of important events, which began in the Etruscan period and continues through the Middle Ages and the Renaissance until today where the close archaeological excavations show a history of ancient civilizations. A special dwelling with a unique wealth of valuable cultural experience. The property, restored from an ancient fortress with medieval tower documented from 10th century sources, is located on a variant of the ancient pilgrim route of Via Francigena. It was here in 1220 the towns of San Gimignano and Colle val d'Elsa formed an alliance. It achieved its splendour in the Renaissance when the then proprietor, Paolo Cortesi, one of the most prominent Italian humanists and secretary to Pope Julius II, made it a center of humanistic studies as well as his residence with the name "Castrum Cortesianum". In this place he set up a library for public use, welcomed numerous important members of the political and cultural european elite of the time and wrote the "De Cardinalatu" one of the cornerstones of Italian humanistic literature. The place is mentioned in the Italian Literature textbooks. Following rigorous restoration that maintains intact all the fascination of antiquity, we have created an environment of 550 sqm rich in charm and precious in its uniqueness. We offer up to 12 guests the opportunity of a self-regeneration experience, where silence, stillness and privacy are the true luxury of taking a holiday nowadays, far from the frenzy of stress. We host our guests in 5 comfortable double bedrooms and a romantic 67 sqm suite with superb bedroom and private drawing room with fireplace, that enjoys the privacy of the medieval tower. All bedrooms windows look out to the magnificent profile of San Gimignano marching across the horizon and the typically Tuscan countryside with hills covered by cypress trees, vineyards and olive groves. Each room is exclusively for 2 people and individually furnished with precious textiles by the renowned stylist Rubelli, genuine antique furniture and family objects, kettle with tea and coffee selection, safes, mini-fridge, mosquito nets, air conditioning/heating, music sound system, wi-fi, ensuite bathroom with hairdryer and basic toiletries. The resort also features comfortable sitting and living rooms, old fireplaces, medieval stairs, a beautiful garden with terrace and gazebo, a large 6x12 pool to sunbathe, relax or contemplate the breathtaking view of the Tuscan landscape. We do not have triples bedrooms, nor joined beds. We welcome children more than 14 years old. Lavish Tuscan Buffet Breakfast, daily cleaning, private parking. The property produces purest San Gimignano saffron, extra virgin olive oil, vegetables. Cooking class, tastings of our products and dinners on request. From Fortezza de' Cortesi you may easily daily reach Florence, Siena, Volterra, Pisa, Lucca, Montalcino, Pienza and many other important Italian places. ... more   less
