“One of my favorites.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 24, 2014

San Gimignano was one of my most favorite towns we visited while in Italy for 11 days. It wasn't even on our initial itinerary, but our driver suggested it and we are so glad he did. It is a Medieval town that my kids thought looked like something out of a Harry Potter novel. I highly suggest stopping here while in Tuscany - it is not too far from Florence.

“Best view in San Gimignano”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 16, 2014

Climb to the top of the tower to get the best view of San Gimignano. It will really help you to get your bearings. If you are at the top on the hour then you will see the bells ringing in another nearby tower.

Loved the city history and the view from the Bell Tower. A must when discovering the area. Avoid August if you do not like crowds...

“My favourite city!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 8, 2014

When I first walked into this historical city, I was captivated by the families sitting by an old city centre with coffee in hand, surrounded by buildings hundreds of years old. The care, preservation, respect for building and appreciate for all aspects of beauty fills this village. I think it is a little gem in Italy that reminds us we really haven't changed all that much!

“Torre Grossa, the highest tower in town with beautiful views”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 5, 2014

You can go in on a door next to the main cathedral, in piazza del Duomo.
The ticket is combined with 2 other sites: Palazzo Comunale (where you walk in to climb the tower) and the Pinacoteca (10min walking), and its worth the price (7 to 8 euros).
To go in the tower you have to start inside the Palazzo Comunale. There are 2 floors where you can visit some rooms with painting exhibits, including the room where Dante Aliguieri slept. The Palazzo Comunale dates from the late 13th century and contains important fresco decorations aswell as a gallery and the "Sala del Consiglio" (council chamber).
The Torre Grossa” (big tower): You have to be kind of fit to climb all the steps to the tower (54m high), but the views are really worth it. You can see all the Tuscan countryside, all the towns squares from above, is really breathtaking, especially on a sunny day.
I went in early (9am), and it was very quiet and it was nice to experience the climbing and the views on my own.
After 10am all the buses of tourists start arriving to the city and it will be more messy and crowded, as the tower staircase is rather narrow and there is not much space above.
Is really worth going up to see the views.
