“The Torture Chamber”

Medieval Criminal and Torture Museum

Attraction details
Owner description: Medieval and criminal Torture Museum of San Gimignano: "A collection of instruments of torture" This exhibit includes images and words, a unique world-wide collection: 100 instruments produced for causing pain and death. It shows exceptionally rare pieces dated back to the XVI, XVII and XVIII century and more recent philological reconstructions of ancient and lost instruments. Very well known instruments such as the Iron Maiden, the Guillotine, the Rack, the Interrogation Chair and the Chastity Belt. But the peculiarity of the exhibit is showing to the public for the very first time less known but very refined instruments. From the Heretic’s Fork to the Noise-maker’s fifes, to the Gatta da Scorticamento to the Spanish Spiders, these instruments prove how human imagination and sophisticated intelligence had no limit in finding new ways to inflict the most atrocious and cruel tortures. One section of museum is entirely dedicated to witchcraf, witches hunt and to the Inquisition Tribunal.

“The Torture Chamber”

This was just a quick day trip , hopped on a train and then catch a bus to the Medieval section of this ancient town , built around the thirteenth century it was considered the Manhattan of olden times , most of these cities were surrounded by thick , high , stone walls to keep the barbarians from sacking the towns , while i was there i came upon the museum of Torture which i found very interesting since where's the fun in just shooting somebody , bang and there dead but walking around this place they were very creative with there different methods of extracting information out of there victims . For instance the Iron Maiden that opens from the middle and once a person is placed inside they are standing but eventually you've got to get tired so which ever direction you lean there are sharp spikes sticking out and you can imagine the rest or they build a wall around your body while your still alive , you can't move or go to the bathroom and they just leave you there , of course there are crosses just for a good old crusifixion also they have this collar they place around your neck and inside it are spikes real long and sharp and you end up getting blood poisoning , maybe not for everybody but i had fun wishing i could used these handy little contraptions on certain people that annoy me at work ! just kidding !

“Perhaps I'm being harsh ...”

but I think this really is a very average "museum" very out of place is such a beautiful place - more fitting for an amusement park or an airport. Maybe if I'd seen it in winter rather than summer '99 it would have been less of an effort to stay inside

“Torture Museum... not for the fainthearted!”

Whilst fascinating, you will leave the museum feeling disturbed. We visited the "Execution" museum as well which depicts the various methods used to execute people in years gone by. I found it really upsetting but my husband thought it was very interesting.

This is a little museum that can be interesting;
I mean that during your trip in San Gimignano, about one hour in this museum can give some more informations to your children.

“Ooohh SCARY!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 20, 2012

The torture museum was a total eye opener, to say the least. A lot of very interesting things inside. Historians should be interested as there are many references to witch hunts and medieval punishments. Also, you get to see the actual torture instruments! Including an iron maiden and a guillotine! really cool. Not recommended for the weak of heart (and stomach).
Really reasonable price, as it showcases almost every torture device/method during the medieval period and the present. Don't forget to eat gelato after!!!
