“So happy to stumble upon this place!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2012

We didn't have any reservations when we were driving in Tuscany. We wanted to check out the town and then decided we should stay overnight. We stumbled upon this hotel.

It was a great little place with nice staff, big rooms, decent breakfast and a garage nearby to park our rental car. We enjoyed sitting in the sun, sipping our coffee and being mesmerized by the totally awesome view from the breakfast room!!

San Gimignano was very quiet after 7 PM but it was awesome to wake up and explore the village before the huge crowds appeared. It's not the Hilton but I would highly recommend this place to most people.

My husband and I spent 7 nights at this lovely little hotel using it as a base to visit some of the wonderful hilltop towns which are within very access. As all the reviews say, San Gimignano is full of tourists during the day but in the evening is a different story. We chose to stay here as we like to be able to walk rather than drive to a restaurant/bar in the evening and there are some excellent places to eat within a a few minutes walk from the hotel. Our room, number 21 on the top floor, was perfect with 2 sets of doors on to a tiny balcony where we sat every evening before and after dinner. The view is simply beautiful!!! The room has both AC or ceiling fan, small sofa plus table and chairs which was really useful. Bathroom was fine but a bit dark. I would have liked a mirror in the bedroom. The hotel does have nearby reserved underground parking at 15euros/day but we parked at the lower car park, P1 for 6euros which is only about a 10min uphill walk. Good for walking off the Tuscan food!!!
The staff are very helpful and friendly, free internet access is available, breakfast is perfectly adequate though rather unimaginative after 7 days of exactly the same. Do ask for fresh cappuccino or espresso as the regular coffee supplied is a bit grim though they will charge you for a second cup! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and highly recommend it.

Room Tip: The rooms overlooking the countryside very quiet. Suspect the ones overlooking the street are much n...

We have visited this town many times before and it has always been on our list to stay over. So we did. The hotel is inside the city walls so you do have to park in the car parks outside but this is not really a problem. You can stay quite close and pay 20 Euros or , being thrifty, we stayed further away and paid 6 Euros for 24 hours. Downside, yes, you do have to lug the luggage 400 yards and in 38 degrees plus you notice it but you pays your money and takes your choice. Staff warm and friendly and even are happy with slow Italian (well, you do have to practise). We had a 2 room suite. Bathroom quite large with bath and shower. Shower good. All clean and lots of what I call "traditional" Italian towels. The suite was spartan but more than adequate for our needs. I would have liked a mirror in the main bedroom to make drying hair easier but you can easily use the bathroom.or other room. The room was quiet. It had air conditioning which was needed. There are also fans. The view was WONDERFUL and I would stay again for this. The restaurant where we had breakfast was in a spacious area with wonderful views. (Downside, and it seems churlish to say but if the sun is shining this makes certain tables near the vast windows very warm. Not an issue for us as we sat further back). Selection of food was fine. I liked the selection of fruit. Staff helpful and not intrusive. I would stay again but would probably choose somewhere else just to contrast!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view!

Upon entering our room on the 4th floor it was dark and closed up. Opening the shutters revealed a postcard view of the valley below.Stunning! We had the 2 room suite that was comfortable and clean. Staff were friendly enough and appreciated it if you greeted them in Italian , albeit limited.
The breakfast was plentiful but the dinner at night was fantastic. The best hotel restaurant by far!
Being so close to the entrance was interesting as you could see the day tourists flowing in but by 5 or so it was almost deserted. My husband and I enjoyed walking the quiet streets after dinner every night. Will definitely recommend this hotel as we considered it our haven after 4 hectic weeks on the go!

Room Tip: Ask for a back room facing the countryside on the top floors

While I am glad that we stayed in the hotel during our one-night stay in San Gimignano, I probably would not stay if we went again, and not if we were to stay for a longer time.

The pros of the hotel are obvious. It is inside the city walls, which is great for seeing SG in the evening and earlier morning, when it is less crowded and much more pleasant. On the other hand, as all parking is outside the walls and the nearest parking is 100 or so yards away, you will be lugging your bags a bit.

Second, if you choose the right room, as we did, the view over the countryside is wonderful. Absent that view, I would not stay here.

For these reasons, the hotel was the right choice for our one night.

The cons are several. The room is no great shakes, and the shower was abysmal. It is a tub and shower, and only a small portion of the tub it enclosed, and not well. the tub itself was very slippery, and no matter what you tried, the shower soaked the bathroom floor, which being tile was also quite slippery.

I have never been to a hotel where the staff was less friendly. We had to ask for everything. they did not even volunteer a map until we asked, and the time and location of breakfast almost had to be pried from their lips. They would not even acknowledge you if you did not say bon giorno first, and this was not just one, but three different desk managers. We are pretty independent and did not need much, but it is nice to at least feel a little welcome.

I was also annoyed that although internet service was available, it was limited to a single common area, and was available only on a paid basis, for 5 euros per half hour. I would much rather pay a bit higher rate and have free access.

All in all, this was the worst lodging we stayed in during our trip, although as stated, it was still the right choice for our purposes.

Room Tip: The only rooms that I would consider worthwhile are those that have a view over the countryside. Ot...

Very good place to stay.
Window faces the main street, but noise is not a problem. We had a very quiet stay.
Nice room, clean and tidy
Restaurant has a terrific view
