“A truly beautiful place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 6, 2013

We chose Il Casal del Cotone from Alastair Sawday's book (2001). All of the places that we have selected from his books have been great but this one beats all the rest! Sitting outside for breakfast in the Italian sunshine, softly recorded classical music playing in the background and surrounded by Tuscan fields of vines and cypresses will make your heart weep for joy. An E.M. Forster quotation in Sawday's book "love and understand the Italians, for the people are more marvellous than the land" will partly introduce you to the charismatic owner Alessandro. Always present, seeking for perfection and spontaneously funny. Only 2 miles from the beautiful medieval San Gimignano and within easy reach of Florence, Siena and other fascinating walled cities, this is the perfect location for a week of pleasure. Come back late afternoon and cool off in the pool before one of Alessandro' s fabulous dinners that he offers every other night. We met many lovely people during our stay here from Russia, Belgium, Japan, Germany, France and Boston. Holiday memories to hold with us.

Room Tip: All rooms great, upstairs for best views, downstairs for outside terraces

My friend and I recently stayed at Il Casale del Cotone. We had stayed in Venice, Rome, Amalfi and Sorrento prior to our week here and Boy were we delighted with our choice of Il Casale del Cotone. This place is so relaxing and really makes you feel that you are on holiday.
The accommodation, kitchen, dining area, outdoor dining, pool and grounds are spotless and well maintained. Alessandro works like a trojan and nothing is left to chance. We enjoyed 2 of his beautiful dinners and were lucky enough to have his charming company at one of our outside soirees with wine and food we had bought from the local San Gimigniano deli.
I see other reviewers have mentioned that Alessandro looks like George Clooney, ...well he does, and his waiters look like Johny Depp and The Mexican.
We made friends with other guests over the week and felt like we were leaving family behind when we left.
Our only regret was that we could only stay for 7 days. If I ever return to Tuscany, this is the place I will be staying at again.

Room Tip: I did not hear anyone complain about their room, ours was 23 and was great.

Stayed here for 8 nights till June 14th. Should have stayed longer. Excellent place to stay and explore the region.
This place is like a palace and a home away from home. Every attention to detail is provided by Alessandro the owner. He is like a Duracell battery. Keeps on going and does everything. He is always there when you need him. He puts on a dinner every second night which is like a 6 course meal. If you want to experience Tuscany style meals. This is the place. Excellent meal and at 35 euro per person is well worth the price.
Very clean, nice pool, quiet and centrally located. I will return the next chance I have. Met some wonderful, guest here from NZ and AUST. as well and we were all like a big family... Thanks Alessandro for a wonderful stay.

Room Tip: Has a nice pool as well

We spent 5 nights at Il Casale Del Cotone and could not be happier with our choice. The place itself is beautiful, very tuscan and set in the olive groves and vineyards just outside of San Gimignano. We had a standard room which was very spacious, had its own little kitchen/living area and our own little bit of garden to sit out in (had the weather been more accommodating we would have taken full advantage of this!).

Alessandro, the owner is quite the character, we arrived whilst they were all in the middle of setting up for the evenings dinner (created by Alessandro) and the smell was out of this world - so we had to stay to sample it, absolutely one of the best meals that we had whilst we were away, and actually one of the best meals we have ever had for 35 euro including 1/2 a bottle of wine, in fact meal is probably the wrong word - feast is more appropriate!

An easy drive into San Gimignano and a good base to explore the rest of the area, we would have no hesitation in recommending this place to everyone and anyone. Our only wish was that the weather could have been better so we could have enjoyed the beautiful pool area a little more, but hey ho, there are far worse places to be stuck in the rain :)

We caught the train from Venice to Florence, rented a car and drove to Il Casale del Cotone. Upon our arrival we were greeted by the owner, Alessandro Martelli, who was in the kitchen preparing a 5 course meal that he served to our party of 7 and 20 other guests. It was a meal fit for a king with service to match! The rooms are great and the setting is spectacular!! We will certainly be back and will recommend Il Casale del Cotone to all of our friends. A great experience!

I was with some friends of mine for 4 days at Il Casale del cotone and can only say that everything was perfect and fantastic. The room was large, bright, clean and very good decorated (nr.23). The breakfast was plentiful and very well served by the owner himself. Mr. Alessandro is a very sociable person, prepared and available for any questions or problems that guests may have.
I will return with my family in august to show them this beautiful place and make them taste the delicious food that the owner prepares for the guest.

We stayed at the lovely Il Casale del Cotone in May, 2013. The location is a few kilometers from the town on a hill overlooking the vineyards of Tuscany. The owner, Allessandro Martelli ( a thin George Clooney lookalike) couldn't have been nicer. The view is breathtaking and the addition of a pool is nice. The room we had #25, was small as was the tv. Unfortunately, we could not pick up Internet service from our room. The highlight was the fabulous dinner that is served most evenings. Everything is freshly prepared with fabulous appetizers, pastas, chicken & steak. Wine (all you want) is included as well as after dinner drinks. All for 35 euros per person. The dinning room holds about 18 and was full on our night. The charming setting is conducive to conversation with other tables and lively discussions were all about. There was a huge amount of excellent food and drink served during our 3 1/2 hour dinner. We will return!
