Owner description: San Gimignano's main square has the town's 13th-century cistern, or well, in the center surrounded by some of the town's majestic towers.

You can see grooves in the well where the people got their water for centuries. The square was very busy in July. Early and later in the day, not so bad. They had free entertainment every evening. Lots of fun.

Touring San Gimignano during the third week of June is especially exciting due to the Ferie Delle Messi, a festival which is celebrated every year in this delightful Tuscan hilltop town. As you make your way to the Piazza della Cisterna, you'll encounter local citizens in costume, many of whom are happy to pose for pictures. If you are very fortunate, you'll hear the sounds of a band echoing off the ancient walls and towers as you approach Duomo di San Gimignano, where a flag throwing ceremony may be taking place. Afterwards, if you head south on Via San Mateo toward the gate at the south end of town, take the first left after you pass under the arch to a spot where you'll find some of the best views of the Tuscan countryside. Find someone to swap cameras with and take pictures! The background is priceless!

Nice place to rest and enjoy a gellato. Sit on the steps and make a wish in the old well. Wonderful views from this location, too!
