“OFF THE BEATEN TRACK BUT THE SITUATION IS PERFECT”

Our last day at Il Granario. Am writing this while enjoying: panoramic views of ochre-coloured hillsides, cloudless skies, 35 deg temperature, the scent of lavender and roses, a cuckoo calling from the woods, butterflies fluttering by, bees buzzing in the shrubbery -- less impressed by the flies buzzing in my ears (literally). We've had an excellent 10 days stay here in Tuscany. Though smallish, Il Granario has proved ideal for three adults (me, my wife and daughter), and has provided everything we've needed --and more than we expected. Plus unending sunshine every day (if it's as hot as this in June, what's it like in August?). We've enjoyed the pool -- clean and certainly refreshing. And though a bit off the beaten track (a car is essential), the property's situation is perfect . We've been able to visit all the recommended places -- Sienna, Volterra, Colle Val D'Elsa, San Gimignano, Monteriggione, Montipulciano, Pienza, the old part of Certaldo (up the furnicular), as well as less trippery villages such as Montalcini and Barberino.

Now a few tips:
1. The rutted track to the property has a nasty, semi-hidden ditch along one side waiting to trap unwary drivers (Hope the car rental people don't inspect the underside of the car).
2. If you park at the Coop supermarket in San Gimignano, make sure you set the parking disk on your windscreen correctly. We didn't -- and got a 39 euro penalty.
3. If you're planning to visit Florence by train, we found parking at Castelfiorentino most convenient and easiest to find. The last direct train back from Florence is at 9.10 pm. If you want to stay later, you can catch the 11.07 train to Livorno, get off at Empoli, and take the connecting bus from outside Empoli station.
4. Re places to eat out locally, we liked the Antico Borgo in Ilano.

Thank you for your review. You describe the sights and sounds of 'I'l Granario' perfectly. Thank you also for your advice to fellow travellers and potential guests. The restaraunt Antico Borgo is my particular favourite so I'm pleased to hear that you went there and enjoyed it too. I am aware that maintenance work is planned imminently on the road which should smooth out some of the bumps in it. I will also ensure I advise my future guests about the parking arrangements at the Co-op in San Gimignano and am sorry to hear that you were fined by the local police. I can see from your overall ratings that you still managed to have a wonderful time and I hope to be able to welcome you back to 'I'l Granario' again sometime.
Warm Regards
Steve

What can I say – great accommodation and stunning location. We arrived for our week at I’l Granario in the dark, this was our first trip to Tuscany - directions from the owner Steve were Spot on – we had an idea from the reviews and pictures online what Il Granario was about but these don’t do it Justice.
We awoke the next morning to sunshine, peace, tranquillity and one of the best views of the Tuscan countryside you will see. The location of property is outstanding, perched on a hill with uninterrupted views of the Tuscan countryside; the sunsets are to die for. The accommodation is top notch, spotlessly clean and well presented a real home from home – it was a pleasure to cook in the well equipped Kitchen. Wildlife is in abundance - birds, insects and flora - we saw foxes, Deer and hares near to the house.
This is the first time we have been to this part of Italy. It’s so beautiful and laid back; it has a real rustic charm and feel. With very little traffic on the roads in this region, only the major towns of Siena and Pisa being rather busy – It was a pleasure to drive compared to the UK - Just Don’t speed, there are speed cameras – you have been warned.
The nearby medieval towns of Volterra and San Gimigano are a must with stunning views around every corner, plenty of places to eat out, and both have supermarkets (these are both open on Sundays) if you arrive late on Saturday evening, supermarkets tend to close around 9pm – worth bearing in mind if you come in on a late flight and need to stock up on supplies. Siena with the famous Piazza Del Campo and Duomo, are a must see around 1 hour 30 minutes away.
If you want to just get away from it all - just relax, chill, take in the location, weather and the Italian way of life – this is pretty perfect. My family and I intend to return soon, it’s just one of those special places.

“Lovely accomm in scenic location”
Reviewed April 21, 2012 for a stay in April 2012

Really lovely accommodation in very scenic setting. We loved the apartment, nice and warm and had everything you need. Nearby town of San Gimignano was gorgeous. Weather was not kind to us but we saw a lot. Just be mindful that the property is 2.5kms up a dirt road. Low slung cars would find it difficult to negotiate. Substantial potholes along it.

Thank you for your review - I make every attempt to make the house welcoming and 'like home' rather than just a rental property. I am pleased it met your expectations and that you also enjoyed the views. I acknowledge the comments about the condition of the road and do point this out in information I send to guests. The road is is due to have maintenance work carried out but, in common with many access roads to properties in this part of Italy, it is a gravel surface and is prone to pot holes. I will make this clearer on my website and I am grateful that you brought this to my attention.
Best Wishes

“Excellent, high quality, good value holiday rental.”

We arrived late afternoon, parked up, looked at the view and said "Wow". The scent of flowering broom and roses soothed our travel jangled nerves as we carted luggage up to the front door. Swallows swooped and called, a family was in the swimming pool and the kettle worked. The rest of the week was like that. Just go, it looks just like the pictures. The TV and DVD player etc all work if you are not too tired to watch. The plumbing is modern. Spot the lizards, the hare, and the visiting fox. And last of all, check your hire car has a spare before you drive away from the airport. The track to the house is a bit rough - though fun - and not kind to tyres.
It's not a property for physical disabilities but my teenage son on the autistic spectrum had a great time

“Beautiful location for exploring the best of Tuscany”
Reviewed June 18, 2011 for a stay in June 2011

We stayed at Il Granario for 10 days in June 2011 - the house is lovely and well equipped in such a beautiful setting in the hills of Tuscany. The views across the landscape are every bit as amazing as they appear in the photos! The only downside about the location is that there ar no amenities or restaurants within walking distance due to the fact that the only access to the house is the 2.5km track into the hills. So driving everywhere is a necessity. Once out of the track though, there is a fab little restaurant called Il Castagno only 5mins drive up the road which serves great local Tuscan food with friendly service. The nearest large supermarket is about 20 minutes drive to nearby Montaoine where the award winning San Gimingnano white wine is sold for only 4 euros! We stocked up on food and wine and enjoyed the peace and beauty back at the house on many an evening. The main tourist attractions are all close by - Siena, San Gimignano, Florence, Pisa - the majority of Tuscan roads are quite bendy and progress is slower than at home so you can happily take your time getting to most places of interest. I would advise catching the train from Certaldo to Florence as it drops you right in the centre of Florence and is cheap at only 8.50euros return! Sometimes the Italian city traffic can be confusing- particularly if like me you haven't had any experience driving in Europe. Trains go every hour and it only takes 35mins to reach Certaldo via very gentle roads in comparison!
The weather was a bit mixed in June - some windy weather, some rain, but mostly very sunny and hot in the afternoons which was lovely. A bonus of being in the hills is the cooler temperature overnight which makes for a great nights sleep after long days sightseeing!
If you have any questions at all, the owner Steve is so obliging and will happily correspond with you to ensure your holiday is the best it can be.
