I stayed at the Palazzo for 2 nights, 6-7 Sept at a rate of EUR40 per night (single/room only) booked direct with the B&B. San Gimi is only a small town, so any location within the town walls is fine - it only took me 1 hour to walk the entire perimeter of the town walls via the guided pathway.
When I booked this place, I wanted to stay in an original palazzo in keeping with the ambiance of San Gimignano. This is a fantastic 50 room palazzo belonging to Pierluigi and his family and it really was an authentic stay. Pierluigi explained how the building is heritage listed and therefore every renovation plan must go through correct council channels for approval so the renovations take a long time and cost a fortune. Some rooms are already renovated, and some are existing standard. Pierluigi showed me a fantastic little family suite on the ground floor with its own courtyard where works have been completed and it was just lovely.
I was in room 6, 2 single beds side by side in its original state with my own bathroom. It was very good value for money, although I should have requested a renovated room and paid a bit more as I found it a bit too old for my taste (see my photos). It was however clean and neat. There was no air conditioning - luckily it was already Sept so not too hot. The shower in the bathroom only has a curtin and no shower recess so the bathroom does get flooded.
I loved San Gimignano - much more so than Siena - suggest you stay at San Gimi which is less expensive and then just do a day trip to Siena. I found Siena somewhat lacking atmosphere compared to San Gimi and apart from Il Campo and Duomo, I was disappointed with Siena and wished I stayed in San Gimi the extra nights instead.
All in all, I enjoyed my stay as Pierluigi was such a great host - just make sure you understand what you are booking - the newly renovated family room was great as were some of the double rooms. It is fascinating to be in such a hugh old building where you get lost amongst all the corridors and stairways!
