Torraccia di Chiusi

Donatella and Stefano were outstanding hosts and readily shared their passion for Torraccia di Chiusi and the work that went into the restoration. My two traveling companions and myself had the pleasure of spending three nights here.

The breakfasts were out of this world as we dined on fresh fruit from their garden, just laid eggs, cheeses and hot out-of-the-oven pastries. We also had dinner with them one evening and the bean soup was out of this world.

Stefano offered us a personal tour of the property that made this all the more special as he proudly showed us the grounds, his wine cellar, the small chapel and even allowed us to tour his home and the tower. He provided us with a history of the property, the old road and the buildings. He appears to be a man that loves what he does and is at peace with himself.

Donatello has a joyful spirit. As we sipped wine one night in their bar area she told us of her part in the restoration and how she bought furniture and did everything from supervise the installation of the art work to the interior painting. We also chatted about the wines made under their label and sampled a few.

We felt as if we stayed with family and loved the property, the hosts and their energetic dog Radda and Romeo, a lovable bruiser of a cat. The road to the property is a bit tricky but once you do it once, it gets easier. Just make sure you slow down at the turns and certainly don't plan to walk from the main road.

The rooms were lovely, clean and spacious and we had a suite with two bedrooms. The only thing that could have been done better was to have softer mattresses - they were too hard.

Three kilometers off the main road and up a winding Tuscany hill is one of the most wonderful places we have ever stayed. It was our first agritourismo and we are certainly returning. Stefano and his wife were wonderful hosts at the restored 12th century property nestled within the family vineyards and fruit trees. The accommodations were fine and the view of the Val d'Elsa from our window was out of a storybook. Bruno, the chef, was endlessly creative and each of the wines from the property was different and interesting. We took half-board and would absolutely recommend that option.

Room Tip: Ask for one with a view of the hills.

Besides the gracious hosts, Stephano and Donatella who shared their family lunch wine with us, the rooms were spectacular. The decor was rich yet comfortable, the balcony view beautiful, the surrounding property lovely and filled with flowers and fruit trees. We were only there one night and loved our tacan dinner, left before breakfast but the staff Had set it up for us so were able to eat that too. I am somewhat nervous car passenger and the looong narrow no-barrier gravel road for me was a bit of a negative bit my husband loved the windy drive.

Room Tip: Balcony great asset for relaxing and viewing.

Located well outside San Gimmy down a 3km dirt road, it is really in the middle of the beautiful countryside. Enjoy the peace and quiet in comfortable but not luxurious rooms. The customer service is excellent with the owners actively participating. The facilities are excellent but also go for the food. The breakfasts are worth waking up for and the dinners are worth staying in for.Use this as your base for exploring central Tuscany and you will not be disappointed.

Spent two nights here and loved it. The hosts are a wonderful couple, and very, very friendly. Wine is served which they make locally, very reasonably priced by the glass. We especially liked one of their big reds, Il Grosso.

The property itself is stunning. The grounds are covered in fruit trees, and all manner of greenery. There are numerous places to sit outside, in the sun, in the shade, to read, relax or have a glass of wine. The pool is beautiful, with enough pool chairs for everyone, and a great view of San Gimi.

Our room was nice, and we had one of the larger showers of the places we stayed on our trip. A very nice small gesture is provide fresh drinking water all day long, at no cost. Very nice touch.

We had dinner both nights at the restaurant. Here is where I would differ with many of the other reviewers who raved about the food. The food was good, plentiful if that if important to you (five courses), but I would say it was good, hearty food. Definitely not gourmet. We enjoyed our meals and it was very nice to stay for the evening to eat at the hotel, but to rave about the food, given the food quality that one can have in Italy, is a bit much.

A few hints. There is a walk into San Gimi which I think they suggest is about 2 km and about an hour. It is a beautiful walk, but you do need real walking shoes and it is much longer, closer to 4 to 5 km and closer to 1:40 to two hours. One couple we met were too tired to walk back and had a difficult time getting a cab that would take them and then it cost 30 euros.

The drive in from the road is about 2 to 3 km on gravel. It is fine and no problem for any vehicle, but just be prepared.

Onverall, and especially because of Donatella and Stepfano's hospitality, I would have to say this was one of my favourite stops in Italy. Oh, and I liked Raja too (you will have to meet her yourself)

5 stars - Service, beautiful setting, cooking class, and restaurant.
4 stars - Accommodation - nice, Tuscany decor.

The staff went out of their way to make sure our stay was enjoyable. Could not have asked for a better staff. We were a bit nervous booking a cooking class because you never know how good the chef actually is and whether you will like the dishes chosen. We ended up having one of our favorite experiences of our two week trip. Bruno is very knowledgeable and friendly. We learnt a lot and ate some really incredible Italian dishes.

We had a wonderful 4-night stay here with our family with two young children (2 and 4.) We loved walking all over the grounds with their plentiful fruits, vegetables, and animals. It was idyllic. There is a pond with water foul, and donkeys, too. The pool is maybe the most beautiful location I've ever seen a pool have, with a gorgeous view of San Gimignano and surrounded by olive trees, herbs, and flowers. The breakfast was charming and the dinners were fantastic. The staff, especially Grazia with her fantastic English, were extra-friendly and we were sad to say good-bye to all of them. We had great talks with other travelers, too. Maybe the highlight was the tour of the grounds with the owner, Stefano, and learning about the history of Tuscany and the three thousand years of surrounding human history, all viewable from the tower in his personal home.
